Any forum strat players have opinions on the crowther hot cake pedal? I have actually just ordered one as its been quite so highly reommended to me, and when i tried a friends out at rehearsal it seemed great. but as ive spent quite so much money on it im now starting to worry about what ive orderred! Seems to have mixed reviews online.

My main setup it will be used with is a SSS strat through a Laney Vc30 112.

Cheers

Olly

I tried one and didn't care much for it. For that kind of money,
there seems to be a plethora of options available. YMMV?

I have a Hotcake, here's my take on it, it's a high quality pedal that doesn't "colour" your tone, it does not add mids or trim off the bass like a lot of OD pedals, to such an extent that you can actually set it so that when switched on or off you would hard pressed to hear the difference, some people like that and some don't.

I find it is suited more to some amps but not others, for instance I don't like it at all in front of a clean Blackface Fender when used as the sole source of overdrive, it sounds fizzy to me in that situation, but when used as a clean/slightly dirty boost to push a fatter sounding Fender like a Tweed 5e3 or a Bassman, it can sound superb. That's where I think it really excels, when used as a cleanish boost on an amp that is already working quite hard, in a live situation at gig volumes used like that it's fantastic, in a music store or in the living room at home it can sound too fizzy/hi-fi with a clean amp at low volume.

If you already tried one and thought it sounded good at rehearsal volume and that is what you intend to use it for (as a working tool for Playing live) then I think you will be happy with it. At home, or in a music store at low volume you may have a very different opinion of it.
