You can use 2 heavy guitar picks in both hands to gently lift them off, or, www.stewmac.com has a knob puller which I use. It works great.

I just slip a guitar pick between the knob and the body then I slip a shoe string between the pick and the body and the knob just pops off.

Slip two teaspoons under opposite edges of the knob "skirt" and gently pry it up. I got this idea from a brilliant poster (Gravity Jim) on this forum and just tried it on my daughter's Squier Strat and it worked like a charm, didn't scratch or damage the pickguard or the finish!

Do you think that this would work?

Seriously though, some really nice tips here... thanks all.

Oh, remember to use a cardboard spacer when you replace the knobs.

I like to use some thin cardboard from a breakfast cereal box and cut a slot in it so it looks like a chunky, squared off U. Then push the knob on and pull the cardboard out. This way the bottom of the skirt of the knob won't rub against the pickguard.

Here's a cool old school trick if you have't replaced you knobs yet (or even if you have). Before reseating the knobs turn all three of your pots fully clockwise so that they are maxed out. Then align the #10 of your volume knob with the adjacent screw of the bridge pickup. Now if you turn the pot fully clockwise the #1 should also be very close to the alignment of the pup's screw. This gives you a visual refrence point. After the volume knob is set, reseat the two tone knobs so that their lettering is at the same angle of the volume knob's letters. Nice, neat and complete.
