i know that most guitar companies went CHEAP in the 80's, but i wanted to get your thoughts on the quality of the MIJ's, CIJ's and MIA's strats of this era.

CIJs didn't exist then, they appeared in 1992 and completely replaced MIJs by 1996. MIJs were and are good quality guitars, although they say they were better in the 80's then they are now, but mine is a 1996 and she's real nice. MIAs lacked quality in the 70's and the 80's, but you can find some good guitars from that age. The CBS guys were making strats out of the cheapest materials (wood, electronics...). I avoid those guitars. Once a guy tried to sell me one of those - no thanks!

I own a 1984-87 Fender Stratocaster 72' re-issue Pink Paisley guitar that I bought new in 1988. I have owned quite a few guitars in my 30 years of playing and collecting. My 72 RI Strat is possibly the nicest one I have owned. It ranks right up there with any MIA Strat I have owned or played. When I got it in 1988, I set it up for my style, and have never had to adjust, repair or correct anything on it. It plays excellent, stays in tune, and looks awesome.

Fender had Been bought from CBS by employees of the company who were Guitar Players and Guitar Builders in 1985. Anything After 1985 is supurb. The factory that made Japanese Fender, and the few Japanese Squiers is still a world class Guitar Factory, currently making Jacksons. Even early Mexican Fenders are'n't bad since the Corona Palnt uses the same Quality Control Team.

49 years old. 1st guitar I bought was a '64 Fender Mustang. 2nd was a '66 Jaguar (which I still own). Have owned SEVERAL Fenders over the yers (Strats, Teles. P-basses, Jazz basses) & the one thing I do know....Fenders hook me up. Owned a LP Standard & refered to it as the "axe of death". 45 minutes of playing it was like running a marathon backwards with a Volkswagon hanging off your shoulders. Here's what I own now:
1966 Mustang
1966 Jaguar
1975 Strat
1977 Strat
1979 Strat (hardtail)
1979 Strat (anniversary)
1980 Strat
1982 Strat
1988 Strat
1995 Strat
1998 Aluminum Strat
1998 Strat
1998 Strat
1999 Strat
1999 Strat (Roland redy)
2002 Strat
2004 Strat
There is NOTHING like a Fender.
Fender is like any manufacturer, there will always be good & not so good products from them at any time. The only problem with quality I seem to have noticed is the 1987-1997 USA Fenders with rosewood fretboards seem to get a front bow that WON'T come out. Possibly, this is a defect from the manufacturer of the truss rods themselves & not Fenders fault. Have bought Strat & Jazz bass necks for next to nothing, replaced the truss rods, & they're good 2 go.
To sum up waht I'm saying....
ALL FENDERS IS GOOD FENDERS!!!!!!!!

Back in Hawaii I had a ""70s" Strat I traded a Custom Tele for it; both were blonde with black pickguards; anyway it was a big head, three bolt, micro-tilt, skunk stripe hardtail. It played great and stayed in tune so much better than my roommate's tremolo Strat. I traded it for a Les Paul In NW Florida; BIG MISTAKE. I miss it a lot; no quality problems at all.
