so i changed the strings on my squier and put some slinkys on her now i'm getting this really weird noise on the three top strings that gets worse when i play with distortion (it gets even worse when i palm mute) i think my action may be set too high... is it possible?

the noise is kinda like a scraping kind of noise as if two metal objects were grinding against each other

E A D strings too loose by an octave or whatever you call it.
Thats what it appears to be to me... Most probably wrong though as the Wife keeps telling me.

Tighten them......
I just remember the first time I changed my strings and tuned up.
I was out by one octave and the top strings sounded floppy and weird even though the tuner was saying they where right.
It was only when my mate come round and said wtf have you done cos it sounds cack that I realised fully what was wrong.
Then again it is not to say that there might be another problem.!
