I bought a couple of NOS Russian oil-in-paper tone caps (.047) off eBay and put one in the beasty tonight. Holy man! Definitely a darker sound but I love it! No harsh, shrill frequencies at all. Try it, you'll like it.

There is no limit to what I can do when I have a Brandy Coke and a soldering iron!

I wouldn't like that mod, i don't think. I like the high frequencies you get with the strat and if i want to roll it off just use the tone control or change my amp a bit.

Glad you like the change tho'

Mexi strat w/rosewood. Changed in an .047 for the original 0.47. Strat also has Texas Specials and I have two micro switch mods - one to add the bridge PUP in and one to change from series to parallel with the bridge/mid.

You should try 0.02 before your new 0.047 on your mex Strat

My strat doesn't have those yet, but my 140 does. Sounds awesome!

Do you guys play around with your tone knobs a lot? It seems I roll mine off a bit all the time, probably on 8 or something.

I mess with the tone knobs alot. In fact, on my Heritage H140 (LP like guitar) I also have a treble bleed mod as well.

I always have played with the tone knob. If you play Fender it is a natural (Gibson players just leave them full on all the time). Still, that new cap got rid of some of the frequencies that I perceived as being "harsh". I have not tried the 0.022 but I would think it would be too much shrill treble for me. Maybe I'm wrong. I haven't tried it. I like my start a lot - it plays like silk and sounds better than ever with the mods I have made. I think Strats are far more personal sounding than guitars with humbuckers, and when they are played just right they are simply sublime.

Like I said before, I'm a freak when it comes to having a cocktail, a soldering iron and a guitar to play with - and Strats are the easiest ones to play with.

I found that harshness of the bridge is easly tamed by tying it to the 2nd tone control. It really helps keep the ice pick away.
