Why is the john mayer strat so much more than the American Standard Strat. Are there any specs that make The guitar better or different?

You can only get those pups in the JM strats. I think the JM is Nitro where the Am Standard it poly. Then there is the gold hardware on the JM strat. Also if you buy a JM strat and part it out you make more then the price of the guitar.

Well you're right about the special pickups and that you could likely part out a JM Strat for more than the price of the guitar.

However, the JM Strat does not have gold hardware and it does have the same urethane finish as an American Standard/American Deluxe. I think you're thinking of the SRV with the gold hardware (or maybe one of the limited run JMs had gold :?: ).

AV '62s are great guitars; they have long been my favorite Strat model and you will definitely get that vintage Strat tone from them.

However, they do have the vintage-correct neck specs: 7.25" radius and small frets. Of course I started playing in the late 1970s so that is the spec neck I'm used to on Fenders; if you are used to more modern guitars it is going to feel odd and you will have to keep the action a little higher to keep it from fretting out on large bends.

This will be my first strat. But i had a canadian made guitar called a godin and have been playing that for 8 years. These are the specs
Solid mahogany body, mahogany neck
- rosewood fingerboard (22 frett)
- 1/4" quilted maple cap
- 5-way pickup switch
- 2 Seymour Duncan pickups
- Single tone/volume, and Schaller hardware.
- Neck joint is wood on wood bolt on. No glue, paint or anything else to get in the way of great sound.
Does it sound very different than the ARVI?
Thanks for your help :D

Cool; I didn't remember the Black1 having gold hardware or nitro - were they CS or regular production?

I think the reference was to the JM Black One strat.

Yes to the gold hardware. Unfortunately still a poly finish.

Nitro or not, is a great looking guitar. One I'd love to play. Could care less about the special custom voiced pup's or its a JM strat, the look of it is rather cool!

Agree! But they don't just look great, those Big Dipper pups are the real deal!

I'll always prefer the CS Black1 over the PL10s. one of the best guitars I've ever played (played the original prototype in Cruz's office while out at the Custom Shop on some business)

but if you're in the market for a good start in the 1k-2k price range, I'd HIGHLY suggest one of the Vintage 'Thin Skin' Strats from Wildwood Guitars or Dave's Guitars.

All Nitro, vintage colors, lots to choose from, and CS pickups.

I find the JM's to feel cheap. I've set up several for a couple GC's, they all felt more like MIM's than an America made, which is fine, but not for the cost. Interestingly enough, ive yet to have one come through that belonged to an individual, they were
e all store stock.
