Went to Guitar Center today, saw this interesting MIM Strat with a tinted neck, flat rosewood fretboard (felt like a 12, certainly wasn't a 7.25"). The body had a yellowish looking translucent finish to it. The single coils were noiseless, the bridge was a zebra. Standard tone/volume control and vintage tuners and tremolo. However, on the back was a battery door. There were no other switches knobs or other funny business on the top. It was a new arrival marked at $649. No idea what it was though. Pre-CBS era headstock and logo with MIM on the back.

What the heck was I playing?

Sounds like you got your hands on one of the new Limited Run Player Strats (a GC Exclusive).

What 93greenstrat says - it's a limited run (FSR) for Guitar Center; it has some type of mid-boost in it (I'm not sure if it was the 12db boost that has been on other MIM guitars or the 25db boost from the Clapton Strat).

I believe Guitar Center also has a similar FSR Tele also with the mid boost.

If the specs for these are anywhere, they would be on the Guitar Center website; Fender never puts up the specs of the FSR models.

I looked on GC website, couldn't find a thing. I though the guitar wasn't that great. For some reason, the humbucker was feeding back like crazy through an Orange Tiny Terror, and GC had the action setup way to high. Rather bought the $49 squire that was setup rather well then the FSR strat with nasty feedback and high action.

(this discussion already in progress). I'm surprised that you were having feedback issues with the humbucker; it's a Fender Atomic. Did you perhaps have the mid-boost wide open? It's 25db like on the Clapton model. I wouldn't let a bad set up discourage me from buying a guitar. Even if it were set up properly, I'd still have to adjust it to my liking and to better accommodate my preference for heavier strings (0.11 - 0.50).

That's what full power humbuckers do through a 25db boost circuit in close proximity to a small amp.

I put humbuckers on my mid boosted strat once. Not a sound I could recommend. Far too thick for even extreme grindcore sounds to my liking. No doubt some will like it. It could easily be eq'd to suit.

That's the strat I was gassing for a few weeks ago.
I posted a pic off of the guitarcenter pamphlet
I get mailed.
I played it at gc,
My gas fizzled away.
Wasn't too impressed, now the fsr tele was awesome !

If there was in fact a mid boost, how do you turn it on and off? There was no push/pull pot, no toggle switch, nothing...

It's one of the tone controls (not sure which one). Just turn it down to "0".

I played the strat, it wasnt what I expected, the tone was
Thin, the midboost did a decent job.
The humbucker sounded good no mb on,
Muddy with midboost.
So I tried the telecaster, and sold.
I bought it

Same here. Played the two Strats GC had and ended up taking a Special Player Tele home. I went for Blizzard Pearl one.

that is a sweet color john.
after playing with the tele and the amps eqs, i found sweet spots clean and overdriven.
also some classic distortion tones with the egnater gain on half way,
the tone knob rolled off about half, and a little midboost. had some woman tone going on.
the same but tone knob all open, classic distortion.
this guitar is extremely versatile.

Yeah, I couldn't resist the Blizzard Pearl Tele. It's an American Standard finish I have always liked and it was cool to find an MIM Tele with it.

I haven't tried the Special Player with a modern amp yet. I have been having too much fun using the mid boost to push my Deluxe Reverb Reissue into natural tube breakup. Plugging in to my Egnater Rebel half stack is next on my list. I'll give your suggested settings a go.
