 My friend and I went to the local guitar store yesterday and tried out some guitars because he was going to buy one

we took the 1st "standard Stratocaster" which was $400.00 into the amp room and tried it out , it sounded very good.
then we picked up a squire stratacaster wich was 150.00 dollars and it sounded the same to me.
is it worth getting a squire or is there any point in getting a more expensive guitar?

Most people will say its hard to tell the difference. But there has to be a reason why they charge more for certain models. Mine was made in America and they start around $1000 so you get what you pay for.

It is the law of diminishing returns. The higher the price, the more subtle the differences. Better selections of woods, fewer chunks in the body, better fnishes, more options, better tuners, better fit and finish, incorporates newer technologies, etc. etc.

True, as the poster said upthread, you do get what you pay for.

i have a mexican strat and a squier.... the mexican seems to maintain quality much better than the squier, which is somewhat falling apart... i feel it is worth the increase in price for the mexican model

if it sounded the same to you and you liked it..... the differences between the squire and the standard probably won't matter to you

My rule of thumb for new players is to get the most guitar you can afford. If you end up becoming a guitar player you don't have to trade up so soon. If you don't end up playing you'll at least get a bit of your money back. If you try to sell a used Squire you might get what? $50?

And...there's nothing worse then trying to learn how to play on an instrument that doesn't intonate well, stay in tune or maybe even hurts to play from the action being too high.

Hi:

You can find great guitars from Fender is almost any price range. I have my Squiers I bought new back in the 80s, and 2 MIM's from the 90's and a Custom Shop Strat I got in 2004, I keep all my gear and try not to sell anything. I also have a 99 dollar Squier 51 (all stock) that I enjoy playing. I also have a bunch of Danelectro stuff too

I had a Squier Strat that was just fabulous. I should never have sold it.

Some times you can find an excellent guitar where you least expect it.

I bought a squier on craigslist for $40.00.. for my grandson. After i set this thing up I was amazed. The electronics 'though cheap' sounded ok, But the neck was fantastic ! I took the neck off and put it on a loaded vintage strat body I had been seeking a vintage neck for. I had to give my grandson another great squier i had purchased in the 80s. But these are the only two exceptional squiers i have run across.

I took the pickguard off of a Squire and found the electronics, especially the pots, to be really cheap like the components you'd find at Radio Shack. The body and neck is great for the price. If you want a future project like stwitching out the pups then you can get better quaility components and swap them out at the same time. It could a be fun learning experience. I think it is important for electric guitarists to know how their circuits work and how components effect their sound.
