I had a fit when I learned, what I thought was too late, that GC had Fender do an FSR American Deluxe VG. When the sell-off came in spring of '09, I was able to get my hands on one in Aged Cherry Burst. $1100 with the case. Helluva deal.

BTW: Always look forward to those AZ photos of yours, John.

Thanks for all the great replies, everyone! 8)

I have made up my mind to finally upgrade after all these years. Don't get me wrong, I love my '95 MIM Strat and won't part with it. (It's a common MIM Strat, sunburst finish, maple neck, etc... but it has a hidden surprise - the pups, pots, and wiring are actually from an American Standard (Delta-Tone?) model. Fender somehow goofed back in '95 in either Ensenada, MX or in Corona, CA in their shipping/receiving/quality control departments).

Anyway, I want to upgrade to an American Standard or American Deluxe and keep the old MIM Strat as a backup.

Also, I am looking at a nicer finish, better quality, etc... I don't know... Maybe I'm burned out with the "everybody owns one" sunburst finish/maple neck type of Strat. I am really liking a wood grain finish, like the American Deluxe model I posted up before.

Yes, yes, yes. Sienna Sunburst and Aged Cherry are just beautiful colours. I find ACB a little more palatable, and a lot less variable- some Siennas I've seen have been almost tobacco-y, some more aged cherry.

Personal preference, old bean.

Mine is a 2000 Deluxe. It has the Vintage Noiseless pickups. IMHO, it is the best neck that I have played. At the store, I played it through a TRRI, and I could not believe the sound. Things could of been worse, if I would have put that amp on lawaway also, I would of been in the dog house for a while. Anyway, here it is:

Thanks, Doc.

I remember the forum scramble for VGs when they were discontinued and the price was cut. I wanted a Black/Rosewood Standard VG to match my '65 Strat and I was lucky to score one. Guitar Center hadn't discounted the FSRs when I bought but I would have been tempted if I had the patience to wait. Patience and GAS are one of life's contradictions.

This post made me drool twice! Once over the guitar, then again when I saw the AK's in the background! Guitars and Guns.....two of my favorite things!

I'll agree, but only on the guitar front :P always loved Teal Green Transparent. Personally I think the American Deluxe's best colours were early '00s... Aged Cherry Sunburst, Teal Green Transparent, Chrome Red... just lovely. 8)

That photo got me laughing. Where can you go to get a Fender Guitar and pick up a gun too...
Reminds of the first time I walked into a Walmart or BassPro shop.

It's a pretty nice guitar. $1150 from the scratch-n-dent pile. I prefer the sounds with the button pushed in, although I like the neck and middle position the best regardless of the S1 button's setting:

Maple has an amazing feel to it. Also has a brighter sound. I think it depends on the colour of the body too... I think rosewood looks good with all colours, and maple looks real fly with Olympic Pearl and Tungsten.

Look closely at the curve between the upper bout and the neck; the light catches in a flat space that is actually two dents, as if the guitar had been dropped against the edge of a rail or something similar. There is a scratch on the top near those dents, it look as though the seller chose to knock $350 off and leave the scratch since the dents give it permanent character. I had to look hard to find the dents and the scratch, but now they're obvious to me. Great sale.
