I'm considering buying a Warmoth neck to replace the neck on my '95 MIM Strat. The frets are almost gone.

This one will really have the Fender lawyers coming for me, 'cause it probably isn't completely legal...does anyone know where to get a hold of Fender logos/decals for the headstock? I'm thinking it'll look less "real" without them.

Why don't you simply buy a genuine Fender neck from an Ebay vendor?

There's lots to choose from and zero chance of "imperial entanglements".

your guitar would just be a lie afterwords, because it is just plain wrong! if the logo is that important to you get a fender neck. its just nonsense. all you will be doing is adding to the number of counterfeits in the world. its not a magical mark that bestows the ability to play, it is simply a trademark! you buy a fender because its a fender not because it has a pretty label

Would a new neck be cheaper than a refret of the original neck?

If you do get a new neck, then you should just leave it "logo-less" or maybe get some kind of humorous decal for it. I remember Alex Lifeson of Rush had a "Hentor Sportscaster" for a while - he was playing heavily modded Strats in the early 80s - replacement necks with blank headstocks, old-style Floyd Rose non-fine-tuner trems without the locking nut, and bridge humbucker pickups. He slapped that logo on the one he used for most of the "Grace Under Pressure" album as a joke; the producer of that one was named Henderson; they called him "Hentor the Barbarian" (topical joke - the original "Conan the Barbarian" movie was out when they were recording the album) so the guitar became the "Hentor Sportscaster". I believe he just used rub-on letters, but these days you can get a decal done up fairly cheaply.

Sorry for the rambling story - my point being if you get a replacement neck you can use it as a blank canvas to put on a name that means something special to you - but don't get a counterfit Fender decal for it.

Hmmm... because a Warmoth neck is superior in every way?

Wrong. Its 100% legal. A strat/tele/jag/etc. neck by Warmoth is a FENDER LICENSED REPLACEMENT via legal agreement with Warmoth and Fender.

You're a clueless fanboy. Read the above.

What IS illegal is to pass off Warmoth parts, ala trying to sell a completed instrument as un-altered Fender factory (OEM) instrument.

I've been told that the price of a new neck is about the same as a refret. And from my research into the matter, it seems to be true. Plus, I could get a new neck that is more "me".

The Warmoth necks are licensed as far as I know. Not that it matters to me, a neck is a neck is a neck as long as it's good. After-market monopoly sucks.

Damn, a lot of purists here it seems. Pluralism is democracy ya know...

I agree with this approach. There are several options available that even mimic Fender's script to the point that your eyes would be fooled into seeing "Fender Stratocaster". Otherwise, it's just plain wrong to put a Fender decal on a non-Fender neck (even if the neck is licensed to use the Stratocaster head stock shape.).

Here's a Fender waterslide that just sold on eBay for $81.00! That's about half the average price of a real Fender neck on eBay. And not even a very attractive decal. Seller hints that it is a "real" Fender decal...

Holy shinola!

I have a few in my parts drawers that someone gave me for nada while
I was playing in road bands. I guess he thought that by passing a few free
ones out that he'd get some repeat orders? I don't need 'em, but they're
kind of a novelty that reminds me of my road warrior days. You meet all kinds!

And yet Warmoth will not put a Fender decal on their necks. It is illegal for Warmoth or other neck makers to put on a Fender decal, so it isn't total FUD at all.

Maybe it's legal for a consumer to put one on, but only one reason to put a Fender decal on a non-Fender part, to fool others, period.

someone is in a bad mood
I am pretty sure I never stated anything about the legality of it....... either way the likeliness of fender taking legal action on him for anything is one in a million. but putting a Porsche emblem on a pinto does not make it a Porsche.

Everything you think you know is wrong. Trademark has nothing to do with fraud, reselling, making money from the sale of a branded product,. etc. It has EVERYTHING to do with control of a trademark. The logo belongs to Fender not you, you can't legally use it in any way, if you do you're breaking the law, and Fender's licensing deal with Warmoth does not include the logo, not even implicitly.

It is you who kill us, you who are clueless, you who are passing off misinformation. Learn what the $@!& you're talking about. Do you have an IP lawyer? I'll bet not.

It IS NOT LEGAL. What Warmoth has licensed is the ability to build necks with the shape of the Fender headstock. They are NOT licensed to use the Fender logo!

The term Fender Licensed Replacement Neck simply means it will fit the guitar it is intended for and it is of similar quality. It does NOT entitle you or anyone else to place a Fender logo on it. The license specifically forbids Warmoth from putting a Fender logo on their necks.

Here is a link to the license...

If you are going to lecture people, at least get your facts straight!!!!

You can buy a nearly new MIM Fender neck off eBay for under $200. I've bought and sold a few for some of my project axes. I would just do that. Otherwise, if you like the feel of your current neck, why not have it refretted? Many good repair shops can do this work without hardly leaving a trace that the work was done. It really isn't that expensive, just shop around. Besides, if you get the neck refretted by an experienced person, you will have playability like you never dreamed was possible ;) Professional fretwork, followed by a good setup will have your axe playing better than even $5000 production guitars :D Just saying!
