My 2007 Strat has developed the habit of breaking the high e string - even under tension at rest on the stand! I seemed to remember reading somewhere that this was indicative of a certain scenario, so rather than dismantle everything or become bankrupt through replacement string purchases, I thought I'd throw it out for some comments...

Thanks

You can tell whats wrong by where the string broke. Did it break near the bridge? Near the nut? Near a tuning peg? If it breaks near the bridge, you have a burr or a sharp edge in your saddle, or at some point in the string's path through the trem block to the saddle top. If it is breaking near the nut, then it's the same, a burr or excessively sharp point in the nut slot. If near the tuning peg, you could have a sharp edge on the tuning post near the hole where you thread the string through, but if the string is breaking at the tuning post, you MOST LIKELY are kinking the string when installing the string, making a weak point that can break ;) If you are breaking strings in the middle of the fretboard, it was time for new strings anyway LOL, or seriously, try another brand.
