I heard that it is bad to remove all the strings at once because stringed instruments were designed to have that constant pressure from the strings on the neck.

Is there any truth to this?

I just bought a fender deluxe american strat, I'm thinking about switching it from the white to the tortoise shell pickguard but am worried about this detail.

Also, I'm thinknig about switching from the 9s to the 10s? But am a little worried because the stock strings on the deluxe are 9s, will the heavier gauge affect the neck?

I once put electric strings on a classical guitar and it completely destroyed the guitar.

Your Strat isn't a les Paul

If anything does move because the strings came off you can adjust it all. Leo Fender was a clever bloke and made a great flexible design.

It's a myth that you shouldn't remove ll strings at once - it's standard practice, the easiest way to change your strings and is no problem at all.

Changing from 9's to 10's shouldn't need any adjustment, but if you go heavier your setup might need a slight tweek.. and look out for strings sticking in nut slots.

You might find my String FAQs useful - http://guitarstringguide.com/drupal/faq

(FAQs includes one entitled "Can I put steel strings on my classical guitar?" .. oops, too late! )

I remove all mine at once. If anything goes wrong, its only a 10 minute set up for me anyway.

Heavy gauges are best I think. Keeps everything in check. 10-52 :D

Removing all the strings is OK. I do it all the time.

I recommend checking/doing a setup every time you change the strings. Only takes a few minutes.

I have been playing and changing strings for a fair number of years. I have never had any issues removing all the strings at once. It also allows me to do a proper neck cleaning, and on occasion (depending on the guitar neck) putting some lemmon oil on my fret board. Changing guages of strings will always throw the intonation off, just how bad depends how much higher or lower you go. I always do a quick check, and if needed, adjustments to the guitar every time I change strings.
