hey all,
Still very much a beginner but looking to upgrade. Not exactly sure what I'm looking for and what is a good price. I don't want to spend a fortune but definitely want to get a good value. I found this guitar on Ebay - http://www.ebay.com/itm/110759135290?ss ... 1555.l2649 - any thoughts? Is this a good deal?? Any other suggestion on where/what I should be looking for?

From my limited knowledge, that seems like quite a good deal, I'm not sure if it should even be that low... But I guess the price will go up because its eBay, thats the way it works, and the seller just expects to get more than they've stated...

However, consider:

what is your current guitar? is it a strat-shape? and do you like that?

I'm sure everyone on this forum would recommend going to a shop to try as many as you can-$150 may only be $150, but if you don't like the guitar you get for it, it's $150 wasted.

The MIM Standards are nice guitars but used, they're only worth about $400 to $425 with a case. You might also take a look at the Squier JV Strats -- as entry-level instruments go, they're pretty nice and you can usually find them for $300 or less.

Best of luck, HTH

stay away from the Starcaster. Its a strat that comes with an amp for 200 bucks. Seems like a good deal but they are some of the most poorly made guitars around. A mexican strat or a squier are great first guitars

Does that mean that the whole brand is bad? No. Factories have errors.

You will never find a JV under 500, unless it is beat to hell. Perhaps you mean CV?

Indeed I did, Yogi.

Thanks for clarifying and correcting that.

Depending on what you music you want to play, I would say a Squier Classic Vibe, Blacktop, or MIM Standard guitar.

Hey, are you a Jeff Mangum fan too? I ask regarding your name 2headed-boy. I can't see the ebay listing from my work computer, but I would recommend a MIM standard 2006 or newer. I have four MIM standards and one American deluxe and all of my mim's play as well as my American. Having the guitar setup properly is the key.

Good luck,

I thought I replied to this yesterday but it's not here.......anyway, I personally wouldn't advise starting on acoustic. My first attempt at playing guitar was on an acoustic and for somebody who doesn't have calloused fingers, fretting the strings can be rather painful on an acoustic. A couple years later I got an electric and learned to play rather easily. Obviously the strings are much easier to fret and that makes a difference for a beginner.

But I don't think the OP is really a total beginner. I think he/she is just looking for an upgrade.

You are right Mideniterambler. I'm sure many student drop learning guitar because they start on acoustic.
Learning on acoustic need a lot of determination. I admire you SKcoppertele
