I have a 2009 MIM Strat and I have a string buzz that i can't get rid of. The first thing I did was put new strings on but no luck. So I took it back to the store were I got it and this is what they came up with.

I rest frets, adjusted tremelo, saddles, intonation and neck. It it what it is. No matter how I set any combo of these there is still buzzing. So I settled on fair playing action.

Not what I wanted to hear, Any ideas on how to fix this

If your frets are straight/parallel to the board, neck is relieved correctly and the action is reasonable. The only real answer to rattling strings, particularly the low strings, is that you're hitting them too hard. Try being a bit lighter on them and see if that makes a difference. Harder you hit = bigger string vibration = more chance of the string catching the fret tops. If you see these speed monster players with stupidly low action. The real testament to their playing is how gentle they are.
A lot of people have a tendency to give the E&A strings a fair old whack. I do and have my action on those strings set to 3&4mm respectively at the 12th fret. I never play em much past the 10th so it doesn't matter that much if they are set high up the board. It gets em playing right on the lower register.

Another thing, try lowering your pickups on the bass side.

Also worth trying, is to try a heavier string guage on those 2 strings.

Look out for Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinkies - heavy bottom, skinny top. D'addario do the same set too. The guages are 9 to 46 rather than 9 to 42. If you're normally a 10 to 46 guy, you can buy the same thing but it's 10 to 50 (I think, from memory). Especially good if you do like to give the bottom strings a good hard clout and then wonder why they rattle or sound out of tune..

What so without striking a note on the guitar the low E string buzzes?
If so I doubt it's a guitar set up problem. Unless you have the pickups set to near touching the string and play with an enormous amount of gain.

Are you sure that you're not hearing singlecoil hum. And when you touch the low E that you ground the guitar?

I hear it when it's not plugged into the amp. When it is plugged in I don't think I hear the buzz

It's normal IMHO especially if it disappears when its plugged in. I just made my master TK built do the same by plucking hard unplugged :D

My custom shop Clapton Strat is worse but fine when plugged in.

Play gently as suggested by nikininja. This isn't a fix its part of the art.

I don't know how you do your set up but unless a fret problem you need a proffessional set up.

Neck curve checkup first , not only with your eyes

Check the saddle screws.

They could be vibrating if they're loose..

I would also check to see if you might be hearing a truss rod rattle or buzz when the big strings are plucked. Try tapping on the back of the neck with your fingers when the guitar is not plugged in to see if it rattles.
