Kong.....$400 for the entire project?? That is just ridiculous!! Us Europeans get shafted on price. Especially here in Ireland....My local music store was selling a blacktop strat ex-demo about a month ago for 765euro. That's about $1050.00!! For a blacktop!!

Obviously I don't buy anything from that store, but even buying anything from the States means we gotta pay import duty, not only on the cost of the guitar but we also have to pay duty on the cost of the postage too. It's ridiculous.

That guitar, for $400, could never ever be a reality here!!

Wow, duty on the postage too, that's a crusher.

The project actually cost $418 if I'm to be totally honest, plus 1 set of strings. I picked up the guitar for $320 on Craigslist. They go for $499 new here in the States. The parts were $98 with shipping. If I can get $50 for the loaded HH pickguard which will get me back down under $400, and leaves me with a nice spare set of tuners.

Tortoiseshell SSS Pickguard fits Strat $15.95
Tortoise Shell tremolo Cover Plate $5.95
Nickel Vintage Tuner Conversion Bushings $6.95
Wilkinson Fender-Style Nickel Tuners- Six for Strats and Teles. $28.95
Set of Three White Strat Replacement Knobs $3.95
Made in Mexico" 10.5mm spaced brass Tremolo Block $24.95
Shipping - $11

Craigslist in my area is flooded with really nice used guitars, lots of MIM Strats and Epiphones. I just missed a mint MIM Sunburst Strat with a VibroChamp amp for $300 about a week ago. I picked up a nice Epi Korina Explorer for $250 last month.

Man I wanna move over there for a while just to stock up on guitars!! I'd have the HH guard from ye....

Kong,

Beautiful baby you have there. I love the mod job. Digging the CAR color with the tortishell guard. Awesome job on both points.

Hi Mrs K: normally it would be pictures of guitar innards I'd be paying attention to, but not on this page. She is SO cute! And small, and vulnerable and... surprised looking. Just so charming: you have a gorgeous daughter. Deep admiration. So much work, so many broken nights - but years and decades of pleasure ahead. You lucky things! Again, congratulations. :D

And just so Mr Kong doesn't feel left out on his own thread: bang up job, Sir. As we've come to expect from you. I especially like the trouble you took to get the tuners on exactly straight. That's a touch that separates the men from the boys. Respect.

Cheers - C

She's the most awesome thing we've ever created, including all of Kong's guitar mods/projects! And he'll admit that too. :) She's fun already, and she's only 7 weeks. She's already grown out of her newborn clothes, it's going so fast! We've enjoyed just hanging out with her, whether it was in the NICU for the days she was there or as she's just asleep next to us. Kong wants me to go get my administrator's certificate and become a principal so he can be a Mr. Mom. Too bad I love teaching so much or I'd go for it in a heartbeat! Sometimes we forget she's so little because she's got so much personality, including Kong's temper :o We can't wait to see what & who she becomes. I'm sure lots more of her pictures will find their way into Kong's building threads. Once a modder, always a modder

Oh, and the exactly straight tuners? That's one of his 'things', he couldn't have done it any other way! It would have been a splinter in his brain if he didn't make them perfectly straight.

Congrats to Kong, BoK and the newly christened Konglet.

On a slightly more guitar related note: SMOKING STRAT KONG!! How do those GFS's hold up?

Thanks. I'm still getting the guitar sorted out. The high e string sounds thin, maybe a bad string. I have GFS 60s set in my sherwood green strat and I love em. Once I get this strat sorted I'll be able to report on this set.

I did a search and found info that Texas Specials can be blamed for thin sounding E and B strings based on the pole pieces. I'm going to quote some excellent info I found from another thread by Martian:

Martian wrote:
Believe it or not, the problem you have is 'normal' and rampant. The Texas Specials have a staggered magnet height which dates back to a mid 20th Century design. This design was for a wound G string where the lightest string gauge set started with a .012 for the high E. Unfortunately, nothing can be done to correct this with the Texas Specials. You can only minimize the problem by lowering the bass side of the pickups where the strings will balance better with the exception of the G string which will then become too loud.

I made the adjustment and it is exactly as Mr Martian said, better balance across the strings, but the G is pretty loud. I've got the pickups adjusted to where I'm very happy with the tone. I think it has that classic Strat bell-like tone, very clear. The neck pickup has real nice warmth and the hot bridge pickup has nice bite. I have 009s on it now, but I might try a heavier gauge for the high e and see if that helps a bit more, but overall the guitar sounds excellent. I'll try and get a soundclip together.

Hey guys it been a bit since I poked my head in here. First off congratulations Kong! Beautiful girl! Second, nice looking guitar! I also have a blacktop that I modded, which brings me to my third question..I need a new nut on this blacktop as mine is broke, I get what size and all but I cant believe you just drop in a new one and all is well. It needs to be filed, doesn't it? This particular guitar I use the trem on so its gotta be right....right? Sorry for the hijack, just happened along and BAM! hijack..thanks, Guy

Thanks for the nice words, Guy - and don's sweat the "hijack"!

I'm pretty sure you're correct that there is usually some adjustment necessary when installing a new nut, even if it comes pre-slotted. You're also correct that it must be properly cut for the trem to work properly. When I built my sherwood green strat, I used a Warmoth neck that came with the nut already installed and slotted. It was really out of tune all over the neck and I had to bring it to a pro (Martian) to get properly cut. This is not a knock against Warmoth, their website states that adjustments will be likely necessary.

There are others far more knowledgeable than me who can weigh in on the subject, but I go to a qualified tech for nut work. I do almost everything else myself (electronics, truss-rod, action, intonation).

Every nut needs some cutting, end of story.
A manufacturer can't second guess how much play the frets on the neck have had. They can't account for variations in the nut route.

Kong,
Very clean mod, Blacktop to Mexican Special, nice. Sorry to see the Flood-caster go,
but as long as you have visiting rights we understand
So Erin has your temper and her mother's eyes? The little boys will never know what hit them.
Cheers,
John.E

Hey John,
Thanks for the compliment, while I was doing the mod I was like "Fender should make this", then I remembered the Deluxe Players! Almost the same guitar minus the noiseless pickups and gold hardware.

The Sherwood Tele I sold was just a straight build, not one of my Flood reclaimation projects :). The Sherwood Strat and Natural Tele are still safe with me (and are not going anywhere).
