I like the pickups that come on the Hwy1. They are great forn 70s metal and hard rock. Also don't forget that your amp makes a big diffence.

I suggest you the Air Norton S for the middle and the Pro Track for the neck.

The Pro Track has enough power for any pickup position and the twin black blades mean there won’t be any problems with string-alignment or dropouts. The Air Norton S is warm sounding, very well balanced, and has the same unique tonal characteristics as the original. The original Air Norton wasn’t designed for a specific position or type of guitar, but it has become most popular in the neck position of trem-equipped guitars for progressive music. The S version is also a very good bridge pickup for all types of rock; its combination of medium output and harmonic bite are very effective for single-note soloing as well as chords.

The Alnico III's that came in my Highway 1 work well with my Dimarzio Super Distortion. As far as any other brand, I am not as versed with the different models, but Alnico III or V's should work. Maybe Tex-Mex or Texas Specials?
