Hi, me again. Forgot to ask this earlier. My new am std is still wonderful! The tuner pegs are different than I'm used to. They don't all have the normal concave taper for the string to wind around like I'm used to. 5th and 6th strings are like the old pegs while 1st thru 4th have only wide grooves. I'm used to winding 1st and 2nd strings all the way down- I felt like that helped with the trem coming back in tune- and I'm assuming that the new pegs have to do with that issue as well? Later, Mark

Hi markross,

That would be the staggered tuners, with the first four being shorter. Yeah, the shorter pegs don't allow as many winds as the taller ones. AFAIK the staggered tuners weren't for tuning stability, but for a sharper break angle of the string at the nut, so the second string tree wouldn't be needed. I don't understand this, as I put the windings to the bottom of the normal peg for those strings anyway, and the originals didn't have a second tree to begin with. :?:

Thanks Shimmilou! Now that I look at them again, 1st thru 4th are not as tall as the older style on 5th and 6th. Looks like the angle or plane of the strings between the nut and and the tuner pegs is really uniform. 1st and 2nd go under the string t (new style) of course and they are right in that plane too. So it would seem that these tuners prescribe or determine that consistent angle. To what purpose I don't know. This IS the best playing strat I've ever been lucky enough to play! Luckier to own it too.
