@DetroitBlues: Nah, big headstocks all the way!

@HWY1Strat, I'm sorry, maybe I didn't word it right. I know you'll miss the opportunity to expand your collection further. BUT ON THE BRIGHT SIDE you have the whole collection as it stands (if the rumours are true).

And as an avid follower of your collection (how else would I have known about your affinity for the area 61 pickup), I too will miss your next acquisition.

Having said that I think we need

1) A pic in this thread of your entire collection, INCLUDING mods rundown of each instrument (we all like to mod here and there :p) and
2) A list of any colour/finish you're missing/desiring (I don't think you are missing anything, but just in case)

If the discontinuation is true, this surely would be a fitting sendoff!

@Nik: Too right, it's been a staple of the line, I know a mate of mine who went through a tele standard, mim and settled on the Highway for its feel and tone. lots more stories like that. it seems odd to kull such a loved product. But, theres new products on the way (Marauder n e one?) so maybe they have their eyes on a different prize.

I refuse to believe that Fender would dismiss such a well selling line of instruments. It's business suicide. Unless of course they plan on re-releasing the line in a year or two.

I don't think I've ever seen so much opinion about a guitar being discontinued. Fender are surely aware of peoples good feelings towards the line. So why would they not give people what they want?

I can't believe Wiki, I can't believe some shop employee or owner. Most of em would tell you anything to make a sale.

You make a good point with your last sentence, Nikininja. That is true and I thought the same thing myself. But they're now down to one model on Fender's 'products' page and I'm not seeing any more new ones on display in the stores I mentioned, one of which I've done business with for years and know the owner well enough to doubt that he would lie to me. That's what I was going on for confirmation and I think you'll see the model disappear from Fender's catalog at some point in the near future.

Want the Highway1 models back?? Public demand is the best way I know of to accomplish that. If enough guitarists express the desire for those guitars, then Fender will respond.

Only way the demand will come back is to introduce the pre-CBS era Highway 1's...

There is little difference between the current Highway 1 and the American Special and they are priced about $100 apart. That being the case I don't know if there will be a large public outcry especially since the Special has better pickups. Remember one of the posters on this thread took out the pickups on all of his many Highways 1's. Maybe Fender did listen and the answer was the American Special. I did notice that on the Fender website the highway 1 now only comes in black.

It's back now but the 57Hotrod disappeared from the product list for a good six months.

http://www.fender.com/products/index.php?bodyShape=Stratocaster%C2%AE&section=guitars&series=Vintage+Hot+Rod

It's wiring/parts PDF still isn't on the support page.

It's been in constant production though.
All I'm saying is don't jump to a conclusion until you read something official.

Couldn't agree more! Once the 70's headstock came out on the Highway 1's, is just a matter of time before its discontinued.

I couldn't DISAGREE more!! There is NO such thing as an "ugly 70's headstock"!
That particular headstock was the shape all of my heroes played! (Hendrix, Trower, Blackmore for starters!)
That was the shape I grew up with and admired/lusted after!
THAT was the selling point for me on the Highway One's!
It makes for an ultra cool darkened stage silouette!!

THIS is a thing of beauty!!

Undoubtedly, if Fender has decided to trim off the HWY-1 its because of lagging sales and unless demand increases far enough to fill several production runs, HW-1s are over. OTOH, Fender has introduced several new guitars to the line this year and all of them look pretty good.

Meanwhile, there are plenty of HW-1s on the used market, so grab a couple before prices start going up! Once they get scarce, they might get pricey!

Keep in mind the phrase..."Get 'em while they last." From an inventory and products line point of view, what sells, stays. What sells, is what buyers [not us, but vendors] show the company what is in demand. At the end of the line is us. In as much as HWY1 may yet be the only one on the planet still interested in adding to his collection, Fender decided it was time to move on. From the excitement on the Modern Player series thread, [not unlike that on the Hwy 1 thread when introduced], the successor has arrived. The king is dead, long live the king.

You and I were smart enough to grab one. That guitar's in it's fifth or sixth year now I would not be surprised if it ultimately faded to black. However, that neck is something which should find its way on to another instrument.
