Thanks again everyone for all of your helpful advice. I've got a few things now to check when I get home from work tonight. I like the idea of folding a tiny square of paper and placing it in the nut slot for a temporary fix and to confirm my theory that the nut is cut too low (or wide). And I will double check the winding at the tuning post to ensure that the string sits very low on the post. I do believe the string height at the post is probably not the issue, as the buzzing has continued after a change of strings, and I am generally careful about the strings winding downward when installing the strings on Strats.

One more question... Not sure if it is a dumb question or not... If the problem turns out to be an issue with the nut slot being too wide, might it help solve the problem to simply install a slightly higher gauge of string. I currently have EB Super Slinky "9's" installed, and the "G" string is a .016 I believe. If I put a set of "10's" on there, might that help?? I wouldn't want to go any heavier than that, as my finger strength isn't up to the task of bending heavier strings yet.

Thank you again for all the incredibly helpful advice so far. I learn so much every time I open these forums.

Could well work better with a thicker string if the problem is due to width. However I find the .017" string to be the most problematic of all G strings. If you can find a plain .018" that seems to eliminate the break angle behind the nut issue all together.

The only set I can think of that includes the plain .018" is the Ernie Ball power slinky set.

I checked the string winding on the post and it looked ok, each wind lower than the previous and ending up about 1/4 up the pole. If I manually push down on the G string above the nut to put more pressure on the nut, the string buzzing decreases but is not eliminated. So I think everything still points to a nut that is cut too deep, at least for the string gauge that I am currently using. I did try the paper trick to temporarily "fill" the nut slot and it worked great. No buzzing on the G string now. And no noticeable or negative effect on tone or sustain - at least not playing through my cheap Micro Cube amp. So I will definitely be pursuing either replacing or filling&re-filing the nut. But for now, I am just happy to be able to play without the G-string buzz! Thanks again for everyone who contributed to this thread. I learned a lot!

Fret the sting on the 3rd fret. The string should be close as possible from the fret wire but without touch it.

If the string touch the fret wire , it will buzz.

You don't seem to do this test ? I should write ;

Fret the string at the third fret ( on the wood ). The string should be as close as possible from the first fret wire without touch it . If the string touch the first metal fret wire, it will buzz...."

The string could touch first fret wire very lightly without buzzing if you playing is light. But for normally playing it will buzz.
