this is for those guys that say a sss strat can't shred nor have a rock punk or metal sound

many guys believe a strat with singles can't handle distortion well i guess i'm living proof of the opposite i'm here to defend my "girls" from critics i've heard backstage and otherwise saying a strat can't rock

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAMz-oE5D2c&feature=channel_video_title

what do you guys think?

Have those guys never heard of Yngvie Malmsteen or Eric Johnson
(apologising for any spelling clangers in their names there!)

Both are pretty shreddy. Iron Maiden use Strats in the studio a lot...

...in fact, I'm starting to wonder just how limited these fella's knowledge of the genre is. There's Strats all over the shop! :?

I should have added there that I myself play two Mex HSS Strats, though most of my rhythm comes from the middle pickup, and the leads from the neck.

I do play some fairly heavy and overdriven stuff though and I wouldn't trade it for any other guitar make out there 8)

Hendrix didn't suffer at the hands of singlecoils. At times he used excessive amounts of gain.

Fast Eddie Clarke did well too.

Lemmy for his distorted bass sound uses singlecoils in his Ricenbacker

+1

I guess my tone has been seriously lacking for all these years too.

I always could and still can get my Strat to overdrive quite nicely. Simply crank that tube amp, no pedals required!

I will admit, you are the first person to get a distorted tone with a single coil that doesn't have that usual single-coilyness to it. Yes, there are many like YJM and EJ that play SSS, but you'll NEVER mistake their tone for a HB. I am very interested in hearing your guitar without a backing track obscuring it.

In my opinion the Duncan Quarterpound is maybe the only true(!) single coil that it is close to a humbucker (soundwise) - best of both worlds I would say.
But it depends alot on the guitar itself. Some Stratocasters sound thinner than others (every guitar is different).
Here´s how they sound using an ENGL preamp straight into the PC(starting at 1:50)

Cheers,
Robin

sure i'll start a sound cloud account i have a few unfinished song demos you could listen too (these songs are not organized these songs never made it to its final result when i was playing for my band it's just a demo showing the chords and how certain songs would go) i'll see if i could record some of the songs that made it to their final result... i'm not running a quarter pounder this is a stock vintage modified squier strat
(with the duncan designed version of the ssl-2/ssl-6 set) i find the stock pickups quite enjoyable i don't think people give this strat the attention it deserves for rock music

and here they are :D

http://soundcloud.com/ralfcaetano/hey-mister

this one was recorded with my mim (my d drop guitar)... it sounds a bit more bassy than my other strat (still don't know if it's cause of the tone wood or the pickups but it still sounds pretty good)

http://soundcloud.com/ralfcaetano/fallen-angel

this one was recorded with my standard tuning vintage modified squier strat ;)
