this is my 1988 strat plus the neck pulled apart from the body one day so i took the neck off and was i supprised when i saw the numbers. the neck was dated at 2,1,1988 writtin in pencil and has sc and a llarge cursive D writtin in ink pen the body was datd at 3 or a month ending in "y",0,1988 and the body had a 3 writtin in the cavity and ir also has a factory push pull pot the middle pot. the treble pickup has obviousley ben changed out and it also has an early split wilkinson roller nut. the guy i bought it from in oregon was ken luker of luker amps and when i bought it from him he said it was a jeff bck prototype
at the time i didn't believe him but now i started looking in to it and they look almost eactley alike except for his the dual single coil in the back and instead ofa push pull pot his has a button and also i think i have a picture of him playing it on a songbook any info or opinions on this would appreciated
thanks,
Matt

Hi strikelikelightning,

Without pictures, not enough to go on. What is meant by "prototype", and how did the shop owner come to possess the guitar? (from where?)

Punctuation is our friend... :P Just kidding...sorta.

We need pics (like Shimmilou said), but also remember this: prototypes are few and far between, and they rarely make it out into the "real world."
Usually, when a guitar is being developed (whether as a signature or a production model), the first couple of "drafts" or "practice runs" end up being taken apart and new electronics/accessories/whatever get installed, as the luthier or player is trying to "tweak" the instrument to suit their needs/wants/artistic vision. Very rarely do they dump the first version and start all over.
Your guitar may very well be something rare and unusual, or even a Jeff Beck prototype, but we need pics and further description.

I seem to remember a thread involving a Strat that was usually made in Japan (with some unique 1980's features, such as a Floyd Rose and a roller nut, etc.)...but there were a few that were made in the States. One guy was curious as to what he owned, and it ended up being a rare variation made in very limited numbers. A few other people here owned one or had seen one, but it was only identified with pics.

Most, if not all Fender guitars and bodies have different dates on them. That's because Fender makes a bunch of necks and bodies and then stores them until they put the parts together. With my EC Strat the neck has one date, the body has another and the pickup have a different one.

You mostlikely own a really nice Strat Plus. I used to own an '87 Strat Plus. Next to my Clapton Strat its one of the best guitars I ever played.

Hi strikelikelightning, I can assure you that this is not a JB proto-type. there has been a lot of hype on the web about this. Many people who get a Graffiti Yellow Strat Plus with a E4 serial number and a split nut think they have one. Just not the case. None ever got out on the market. Without picture we can't tell you much but having dates off a few months between the neck and the body is not uncommon with fender guitars. You most likely have a 1988 Strat Plus that someone modified some years back... Any picts??????

In one of my Fender books is a picture of an '87 Strat Plus in Graffiti Yellow and a split nut. Do you have any idea when Fender changed over to the solid roller nut?

If I'm remembering correctly they changed sometime in early 1988 to the second or "double roller" nut.

I had one of the '87s without the double roller nut and didn't have the "hipshot" tren-setter. It was a rosewood fret board, stripped down to the wood signed by Stacy Mitchheart. It was one of the best guitars I've ever own and I miss it very much. I ended up buying a EC Strat a few years later to replace it.
