I have an american standard HSS strat that came with the S-1 switching, but I personally didn't find it to be all that usefull. I found that the additional combinations produced tonal variations that were too subtle to be noticed in the context of a five piece band. Maybe it's more suited for recording or other situations where tonal variation would stand out more. Ultimately I gutted it and dropped in an EMG KHVS system (which is anything but subtle) and now have an instrument more suited to my personal needs and taste.

For true tonal versatility I have a VG strat that I run through my cybertwin SE, which, in my opinion, offers the ultimate in versatilty.

I've got the S1 on my Strat - it's a neat system. I did have a problem with the middle pick-up, but Fender replaced it at no charge after my warranty was up :D I still want to get another traditional Strat though.

To be honest, I don't really like it - I like things to be simple.

Yeah, me too. When I play I'd rather be concentrating on the music, as opposed to where my knobs, switches, etc. need to be. That's why programable amps and effects appeal to me; one tap of a footswitch to get the desired result, and play. Besides, it frees up my mind for more important things, like where I set my beer at the beginning of the set.

After I installed the EMG system on my strat, I kept the original pickguard with the pickups, pots, S-1, et. al. intact and I'm contemplating selling or trading it off. But the little voice in my Frankenstein mind is hinting at picking up a cheaper strat (perhaps with a Floyd Rose) and dropping it in to give the S-1 a second chance at winning me over. It'd just be a matter of convincing my wife that I need another strat (as if four weren't enough according to her).

So it can be installed on other Strats...but would that require the entire 'S-1' pickguard?

the song is called "spells". you can hear the S-1 being engaged right after the first verse i believe, there is an audible click and the tone gets noticably fatter. when the tremelo and chorus effects were used i was at the bridge position. i think i increased the volume pot when i hit the S-1 too.

the S-1 system could be installed on any guitar technically but it would be a headache if your not good with understanding that stuff which im not.

Thanks kja, that's encouraging and no, me neither...I'd have to do as murdochart suggested in another thread, that is have an authorized Fender tech install it. Thanks again !

Cheers,

Have it. It's a keeper! :)

Haven't come across anyone selling an aftermarket S1-switching circuit yet..

they pop up on the bay from time to time, usually the whole setup without the pickups and pickgaurd. stratoshere on ebay sometimes has them. you might be better off just getting the whole drop in replacement and parting out the pickups for ones you want, this might be alot easier. also though, i seriously doubt that any authorized fender tech is goint to try to put an S-1 in a guitar that isnt supposed to have one. i could be wrong but i would think this is a big no no with fender. they might replace the pickups though if you have a drop in replacement already installed on your guitar  ah! make Leo proud! :D
