Yea, once I tried to get a serial number on a Paul in a pawn shop and the owner freaked... I told him I just wanted it to get the date of production and then he calmed down!

He freaked cause he knew it was hot and thought you were a cop.

Exactly, I had to tell him I wasn't a cop and I did't care if the Paul was hot. It was really strange... had two holes bored right through the headstock as though it was hanging somewhere as a decoration or something?!?!

I just bought a Roland Cube amp on ebay for $67. Is this a decent amp for a strat? I will just be playing at home.

Somebody Could've changed the neck plate. Also check the thickness of the body width with another stratocaster guitar in the pawn shop if theres another one. That way you could tell whether or not its strat body if the thickness doesn't match.

It could be a Deluxe Player model ( http://www.fender.com/products//search. ... 0133000327 ) too if you could see through the blue finish. Those come tortise shell pickguards and gold hardware standard.

Ya know....even if it is a frankenstrat, hot, holes in headstock... if it plays nice and you like it it's worth $400.

In reference to your OP, there is no Fender F logo on my Americans either.
