I just bought a '61 reissue thin skin from Dave's guitar shop (my word! his personal collection is amazing!) and it came with a old style spring steel trem cover. Can I use this taking it on and off for string changes without messing up the more fragile finish? :? I keep all five springs on it to maximize the wood's sound so the bridge is right down on the body. Also is lemon oil safe for the fingerboard or is it bad for the finish?

When you say old style trem cover, I guess you mean the ashtray bridge plate. Yeah, you can use it without messing up the finish. I personally don't use them so hopefully another member that does can chime in and show how to use it because I have no clue ^^

As for the fingerboard question, it depends on the fingerboard. Rosewood-yes lemon oil is fine. Maple-no

the real question is why would you talk about this guitar, taunting us, and not post any pictures for us to gaze upon?

The ashtray snaps into place over the bridge saddles and relies on simple friction to hold it in position, as shown with this CIJ '65 re-issue Strat......

"Back in the day" all Strats were shipped with this accessory until the practice was discontinued in the mid '70s. They look cool in place on the guitar but they make certain picking techniques such as palm muting a real PITA. Most folks leave them in the case.
