Hello people!
I was just wondering if there's any risks with sharing the serial number of your Strat, like public or publish it on the Internet :P

Some people could take it and forge a guitar.

I've noticed that "Reliable Fender" on eBay never bothers to smudge up their serial numbers and they sell hundreds of strat parts. I've tried putting on my "evil" thinking cap and could never come up with a scenerio that would give me pause. . .

Insurance fraud maybe?

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I think you'll be fine as long as you don't put your Social Security number on your guitar.

Hmm.. I don't know, but i noticed that some people show it when they want to sell it or just show off they're Strat. And some other people just sensures it... So I was just curious. Cause I wanted to make a web page or something, to show my modifications and the history of a Strat of mine.

A fine thing if people asks wich guitar i play, then I could just show them the page or the guitar if I carry it at the moment.

But thank you for posting, I'll keep it in mind. Maybe giving it a name in stead of treating it like just a object, using the serial number as a name.

I think I can shed a little light on the disclosure of serial numbers in public venues such as eBay and other web places (i.e. Craigslist). First off I never worry about it and on my website I show many guitars with their serial numbers. BUT, I was told this story by a guy in New York that was very concerning. Here is what happened. He ran his guitar on Criagslist in NYC and did not sell it. Some days later the cops came to his house and claimed he had stole the guitar.

Some con saw the guitar on Craislist, filed a police report that his guitar was stolen from his apartment and that he saw the thief has advertised it on Craigslist. He also identifying the guitar, serial number, and had a fake, old bill of sale. The police took the guitar from the real owner, and him as well, to the police station. Now it was his word against this con's word. Good thing was, the owner found the paperwork that came with the guitar when he bought it and showed this guy was lying. I guess these kind of things are not totally uncommon in bigger city areas. Here where I live that would never happen because I know all the police in this small town and keep really good paperwork on everything I have and have sold.

Thanks for the story, Xhefri. I've always wondered about it, too. Never could figure out why it was a bad idea ... guess I'm not devious enough. lol

Similar stories of these do happen, but it usually involves high end, expensive musical instruments. If you are showing off your Custom shop strats or those Historic R8 or R9 les pauls, then its a good idea not to show those serial numbers. Also, a good habit to keep your receipts in a safe place as proof of purchase and ownership.

First ting I was thinking "It's kinda chill living in Norway". But about the evidence stuff. I think that maybe one of the most important evidence you have for yourself is pictures of you and your guitar from the day you bought it and some of the times you played it. That way it should be difficult for someone else to convince the police that you stole the guitar, cause the serial number tells the production year and the digital pictures tells the dates you bought it and played it ;)

Another case that don't involves the serial numbers
http://www.gilmourish.com/?page_id=66
This page said that David Gilmour had two black strats. First one got stolen. Why are people doing that $@!&? Musicians often make wonderfully things on they're instruments, and than some bastard comes and ruins it :@ And the worst thing must be if you've had the guitar for a few years and like it more then anything else :(
