my e.c. strat suddenly developed a "pop" when you hold a note and switch the pick up selector. even if the boost is down or up. i changed the battery, checked the grounds in the guitar, even changed the cable i normaly use. i cleaned the switch but the "pop" is still there. the only thing that i have done to the guitar is to change the tbx to a normal 250k pot.i like it better.i changed the pot about 2 years ago and haven't had a problem.i have run out of ideas to try. anyone got any?

My '98 EC just did something similar, a zapping noise when I played one particular note. After much searching it was a capacitor on the PC board that had broken free but was still making contact most of the time, pulling away when I played that one note and breaking the contact. It was hard to see, but my tech found it after cleaning all contacts, etc, and a bit of solder fixed it up.

thanks for the heads up on that. the noise in my guitar is more of a ground pop almost like the pop you get on a strat without noiseless pups when you touch the strings. when i don't have a note sustaining i can switch the selector and there is no pop. yeh it's strange i know. all my other guitars do not pop when i switch thier selectors, so it's not the amp(just thought i'd throw that in).i will check the circuit board for the booster.

On the thread where I tried to get ideas on my weird noise, it was suggested to wrap the PC board up in a plastic ziplock and fasten it to the guitar body so it doesn't come in contact with anything and cause a short. Someone else thought maybe static, and I should be touching the pickguard to ground myself! Are these ECs that much more finicky?

after checking all these items i'm leaning on the "bad switch" idea. i really don't see any thing wrong with it though, after all it's just a mechanical contactor after cleaning and inspecting it i don't see a problem. i also don't thinkl the pups would cause the pop noise when i switch between them. it's like the pop is ridding on the note(all notes)when i switch pups. especially between middle and bridge positions and at louder volumes. this is perplexing. i'm starting to have pete townsend images smashing his guitar run through my head.
