I use both the Schaller & Sperzel lockers! $@! Strat has Sperzels, and Deluxe has Schallers (came as standard, had no choice  ).

The Sperzels I prefer for having more clearly defined staggered pegs, and the satin finish is beautiful. Plus, they feel... just better. Not sure what it is. However, the Schallers have the bonus of quite a large locking wheel- the Sperzel one can be quite fiddly. They're both very good, just depends which one you would prefer to use. I seem to remember coming across something from the guy who ran Sperzel claiming that they were perfect to within a microcosm of measurement- he used to work in aircraft machining or something like that.

On the matter of the HH question, I'm pretty sure that Mexican models are routed out as HSH. So you should be fine. Personally I'd say stick with a 5-way switch and just enjoy the out-of-phase tones. Pretty sure the Big Apple Strat was wired up with a 5-way switch- have a look around for a wiring diagram.

I'm thinking of getting a wiring scheme like Joe Satriani's, BUT instead of 1 Vol. & 1 Coil-Splitting Tone, it'd be 2 Coil-Splitting Volumes (one working for each pickup), to imitate a killswitch along with the single-coil sounds.

You may be able to find something like that on the DiMarzio website- my red Strat is wired up like a standard JEM7 inside...

EDIT: Have a look here...

With regards to Sperzel tuners...they are (IMO) the sturdiest tuner on the market. About 15 years or so ago I met Bob Sperzel at the Muzik Messa in Frankfurt Germany, while stationed there. He had his tuners on a strat with a tremelo and he said yank on it all you want, so I did, and danged if those tuners stayed right in tune, I yanked the crap out of that tremelo too, especially since I don't use one and it wasn't my guitar. He also had a set of tuners on another guitar and the tuners were cut in half and they still worked and stayed in tune, now that is a tuner!

The only bad thing I can say about that encounter was that Bob had breath that would knock a buzzard off a crap wagon! I got one wiff of his breath and I moved around this counter display he had set up and moved so my buddy was between me and Bob and after 15 minutes of talking with him, my buddies eyes were watering...I was laughing my behind off, because at first he was so into the talk about the tuners and then he realized about his breath and where I was standing he was kind of trapped next to Bob...funny as all get out!

Bob was a great guy and he has a great product, and he sure knew how to build a tuner!

FWIW

Yeah... I wound up getting the Fender locking tuners. They look all right with the brushed chrome look. Not really a problem, just as long as they do their job well. Soon I'll be going up to 10-gauge strings (normally used 9-gauge, but I'll see how they feel), so I'll swap them in then.

What'd you use to enlarge the route? And could I get this done at Sam Ash?

Just do it yourself. You need a sharp wood chisel, and some careful planning. Remember- it's under the scratchplate- no one else needs to see how it was made. :)
