I love my guitar. But I treat it like $@!&.

It's sittin there right now with a broken string.

I told myself I would change all the strings tonight and clean the fretboard, but instead I'm posting on a website. Strange huh?

It's dirty as $@!&. During the summer, I would put a ton of bugspray on and drink beer in the backyard. Then come inside and play the guitar. That Deepwoods OFF is ON my guitar. I tried rubbing it off with my fingers once, but it didn't really work. So I just kind of smoothed it out.

I smoke like a locamotive. The white pickguard is now yellow. It's got scape marks in the pickguard and the black paint I guess from strumming it too hard.

It's got a couple of dings in the body, but nothing too bad.

But you know, that $@!&* still loves me. And I love her.

2004 American Strat. Black, white pickguard, maple neck. 50th Anniversary neck plate.

Anyone else treat your guitar like $@!&?

Nope. I got a project body that was treated like $@!&. I stripped the paint and left the clear coat, scars still there. Looks pretty good.

'Am not ultra-fastidious, but do not mistreat instruments.

You might want to strongly consider quitting cigarettes and cutting back on the liquor, because it does not sound like you are treating your body much better than the instrument, and you can't just go buy new lungs or a liver, like you can a guitar.

Best of fortune.

Wow - a lot of soap boxes in here.

I don't smoke and rarely drink, never eat fast food and baby my guitar....but to each his own.

A rock guitarist who smokes and drinks and mistreats his guitar? Really not that uncommon. Keith Richards, Kurt Cobain, Eddie Van Halen, Pete Townsend....not sure why people are so shocked at the query.

It was a fair question amongst a forum of diverse people who are unified by the all powerful strat.

Man, I'm the total opposite. I treat my guitars with a lot of TLC. I'm so anal about it, I wash my hands just before I use my guitars. I find the strings last longer and it prevents a lot of the crud build up on the fretboard. Each to their own I guess.

Zap:

Soap boxes? What do you think this place is?

I'm not shocked by T2K's posting but I do think hes a Troll and that why I answered the way I did. Go back and look at the OP's post count and then think about it. OTOH.... Truthfully... If he hes for real and he wants to continue to abuse himself and his property, he is free do so. It's his life, his property and his world.

So, presuming that you're not "time2kill" (And I think that theres a very good chance that you are.) What information do you have that indicates that Keith Richards, who claims that his collection contains over 1000 rare instruments, mistreats his guitars? Keith says that he still loves and plays Macawber regularly and that particular Tele must be at least 50 years old.

I could be wrong but EVH isn't really known as a "serial guitar destroyer" of his favorite instruments either.

Jimi Hendrix was considered a serial guitar abuser, until it became common knowledge that he burned and broke up the same couple of Strats over and over again, as part of his "stage act". The guitars he liked or loved, he kept very close to himself and he gifted several of them to other players.

Townsend and "The Who?" Their destruction of equipment began as a spontaneous act born or frustration and became a "stage act" when they discovered how much their audiences got off on it. Pete has said so in interviews many, many times.

Kurt Cobain... I can't understand the cult that has grown up around dead old Kurt but he appears to have been someone who abused everyone and everything he came in contact with, including himself. Of course, that whole drama could have been one more "stage act" but the ending appears to have been rather permanent.

Me? I can't get into the things that made Kurt famous. I just don't find drugs, alcohol, self-hate and suicide to be very entertaining. Obviously, some folks do but then again, I don't abuse my guitars either!

I wasn’t trying to “Troll” the Fender site. I actually had a login, but couldn’t remember the password.

I had to work overtime last night without notice. I was a little mad. I was supposed to get a haircut, buy a new stopwatch, and change the strings on my guitar. Thanks to my job I was only able to do two out of three. By the time I got home, all I really wanted to do was work on this song that I am writing. I wasn’t trying to make anybody mad. I was just venting a little steam.

I do have an addictive personality. One of my addictions is playing the guitar. I’m not that good, but I just love playing my guitar. (I wasn’t “projecting”. I looked it up and I wasn’t blaming anyone else for my actions).

I hate changing the strings on my guitar. I hate cleaning it. I hate doing almost everything except playing it.

When I first got my guitar I treated it very, very kindly. It has always been good to me (now there’s a mental issue). It’s just a thing. It’s not a person.

I’m not really abusing it. I’d say it’s more like “neglect”. It’s a choice that I am making. And like all choices in life, I will either reap the benefits for good decisions or I will pay the consequences for bad decisions. If I don’t start treating it better, it will eventually cost me money.

Sorry to upset ya’ all. I promise I’m going to change those strings. And I’m going to clean it up.

No, I'm not this character. There is no connection there.

Re: the musicians and their "abuse" of their instruments, the context for "abuse" set by time2kill was to have alcohol and cigarette stink and slime on his guitar, and all of the offending parties I mentioned (Richards, EVH, Townsend) would stick cigarettes in the strings and drink copious amounts of alcohol onstage while playing.

This guy isn't smashing his guitar, he's just making it slimy and stinky in the same fashion as the artists I mentioned - though he doesn't have their talent and platform (which of us do?).

That "abuse" by those artists mentioned, is taken care of somewhat by someone, they don't just leave them all effed-up for the next show. We all spill, sweat, get around smoke, etc. It only takes a few minutes to clean a guitar, and we all need to do things that we don't like, because we know it's beneficial. Odds are, this laziness shows in other aspects of the offender's life also. I know of alcoholics that live in filthy disgusting surroundings. I can't stand to pickup someones guitar that is all covered in sticky crap because they are to lazy/disgusting to clean it. Just last night, I refused a friends guitar that he wanted me to try, only because it was nasty, and I didn't want untold filth on my hands and my guitar, tough to play that way. And this nasty behavior will really attract the chicks too. Chicks with issues that is.
