You can play metal with them but you might want to consider a few things first. The amp your playing through is a big one. You might also want to consider swapping out the stock pickups depending on the model your looking at. If your looking for a big thick heavy metal sound then you might want to look elsewhere for that kind of tone, maybe an Ibanez. Or something with a humbucker in there like a LesPaul.

Just my two cents.

Rock, yes; Metal and Heavy Metal, no, unless you do a lot of modifications to the Strat which essentially defeats the purpose of a Strat.

Strats are good for just about any kind of music. If you feel that the single coil pickups aren't hot enough for metal then I suggest either the Deluxe Power Strat, Deluxe Fat Strat or even the Standard Strat HSS which sells new for $399.99 from practically any online dealer. All of the listed Strats are eqquipped some pretty gnarly humbuckers on the bridge position. So try those out before you buy a guitar and feel that need to swap out the stock pups.

I have a fat strat that is factory equipped with a pearly gates humbucker in the bridge position. You can heavy metal all night with this strat and it's completely stock.

My strat is now out of production but if you're looking today, my bet is the American HSS would cover a lot of metal requirements!

I love Strats, but I'd say you might go elsewhere if you play Metal. There are Strat models that would be fine, but if you want that heavy dark tone that only a Les Paul can deliver, then buy a Gibson. That said, it would be cool if you found a good combo of Strat/amp/pedal that delivered the goods for you. Your tone wouldn't be that same old cliche'd metal tone. You would be bit different!!! BTW, no disprespect intended. I'm just too old to play metal, but do appreciate it. I can't keep up with my nephew when he starts shredding, but its cool to watch!

Personally I don't think so. Just get a Guild (it's Fender owned) solid-body electric with humbuckers. Oops, sorry I forgot, Fender dropped all of the Guild electrics.

I was just looking at replacing my Strat's pickups and some replacement mfg's claim theirs are good for heavy metal.
