Last night a non playing friend who owns a 1999-2000 American Standard as a wall hanger asked me to help them sell the guitar..
I had to do a major set up on it and clean it up real good..But other than some dings around the 5th and 6th fret of the neck the guitar is in very good shape..
The price they are asking if i was to buy it is $450 dollars which is a excellent price in my neck of the woods for a American Standard..
The only problem is i am flat broke and would either have to sell three our four pedals or my MIM Roadhouse Strat..
At this price it is real hard to turn down the American Standard and my thought is i can always install Texas Specials in it at a later date..
Keep in mind i own 3 other Strats besides the Roadhouse a 73 Standard ,00 Strat Ultra,08 H.S.S MIM Heavily modded..
The plus of this Standard is its clean tone which is just fantastic it also plays extremely well and has no issues other than the aforementioned dings..
The only down side is i'm undecided about the color it is a aqua or turquoise metallic green in color..I actually like it but it may hurt resale value..
What would you do in my situation?

Not sure how the color would hurt resale value.

It all really comes down to personal preference. It's a good price for an American Standard but it's an older guitar. If you like it better than the one you've got, then sure, go for it. You might ask your friend if you can borrow the guitar for awhile or something so you can play it quite a bit a get a feel for it.

Hi Invader.CC,

Looks like Lake Placid Blue (LPB) if it is a factory finish, and a great deal if in the good shape you've described. Does it come with the original case? Kind of tough to pass up as an addition, but to give up the Roadhouse to get it, tough call (TS are great). You've played both and would have the most insight as to which you prefer (fit, finish, feel, sound). I guess you might consider that the Am Std should have a higher resale value than the Roadhouse, and for $450 would be hard to beat. If sold on eBay, I would expect the Am Std to bring at least $600 and upwards of $800 or more.

Oh, almost forgot; what would I do in your situation? Considering the finances that you mentioned, ie none, then I would keep what I have (nice gear) and charge a little commission for helping to sell your friend's Strat, then save up and keep your eyes peeled for a deal on an Am Std made from 2008 on. IMO, the Am Stds made since 2008 are the best ever.

Hi Invader.
Many things are priced right, so we get eager.
I would pass on this guitar. :D

IMHO (which isn't valued very highly on this site at this point in time)....

Don't sell your MIM. Don't EVER sell a guitar.

Beg, borrow, or steal to get that AM Strat at that price.
(OK, don't steal....don't ever steal) But find a way to buy that guitar AND keep the one's you have.

I sold a guitar once and I still regret it. Aria Pro II. I still miss that guitar. When looking at used guitars for sale, I ALWAYS check out the Aria Pro guitars for sale in hopes that one day I will find it and get it back.

If you don't want others' opinions, then don't ask, and do what you want. If you post on a forum like this, you are likely to get opinions of what to do and what not to do. That's the whole idea of the forum, to exchange ideas and opinions. :)

I think the color is a plus not a negative. I guess the decision is something that you have to do yourself. I think I'd get it. Good luck in whatever you decide!

I always say: "if I am crazy enough to buy this color, there's going to be someone else who likes it too." And if not, who cares. Guitars are keepers.

Cheers

Keep the first and buy the other. You will regret selling the other. I have sold guitar that I didn't care about and missed nothing. I have sold guitars that I loved and I miss them dearly.

Well obviously in a perfect world the OP could keep the Roadhouse and buy the Am. Standard too. But he's pretty much said that's not a possibility.

I think your best bet is to play the standard as much as you can and get a feel for it. Then decide if it's worth letting go of the other guitar.

Also, here's another possibility. If your friend is in no big hurry to get rid of it (he's had it hanging on the wall for awhile apparently and doesn't play), then ask him if he could give you a couple months or something to come up with the money. If he's in no hurry to sell, he may not mind.
