My first Strat was stripped down and stained '87 Strat Plus w/ rosewood fret board.

I bought it at Music 6000 in Olympia, WA for $600 in '92. I really miss that guitar.

Purchased new in 1999 SRV Signature Stratocaster; it was over rated; sold it on the bay a few years later; have a brand new American Deluxe HSS Olympic White Rosewood purchased this year - definitely a keeper.

Mine was bought new in 1964, Daphne blue (I think), rosewood board, "d" neck, Abbey pickups.
It was really hard to play at first, it had heavy (possibly 12's) strings and the trem was decked with five springs .
A week later, it had a banjo string for 1st , medium first string for second, medium second for third and so on , this gave me a plain (instead of wound) third and when I re-set the trem with 3 springs, it played fine. (There were no light guage strings available in England at that time)

The sound, through a Selmer treble 'n bass 50 , was ok, but when I got a secondhand Fender Bassman top ,a few months later, even with full treble on, it was still too bassy, so I saw a friend of mine with a Hofner Galaxie, who got an amazing sound, so asked him and he drew a diagram for me of a built in treble boost .

It was just 5 diodes soldered cigar tube style with a connection at both ends for the live wire as it went to the jack socket.

I split the earth braid and cut the live and soldered it in,wrapped it in insulation tape , then wrapped it in tinfoil to shield it then wedged it under the bottom tone control with plasticine to stop it rattling about.

The tone was spectacular, I could still get bassy tones, but now had to turn my presence right down ,so I didn't shatter too many glasses where we were playing :D

I do miss my first strat. On the other hand it taught me how to work on mine and build up others guitars, it and my first les paul.
Im on my 5th strat now and my 6th les paul. But its been 30 years. I dont play out near as much so these 2 guitars should last me.
Other than dimarzios and straploks they are pretty stock, that is to say I used all gibson and fender parts that required no modifications.

Pretty much. Fender had all kinds of cool models back then; Big Apple Strat, Lonestar Strat, Roadhouse Strat...my store never had them though. Now I've got a Candy Cola '09 American Standard with a maple fretboard. I almost put a David Gilmour pickguard in it. I had ordered it when I ordered the strat. I liked the way the stock pickups sounded through my amp so much that I sent the pickguard back and used the refund for effects pedals instead. David Gilmour is awesome, but those ivory EMGs combined with the pearloid pickguard looked terrible. :o

Yeah I feel your pain, the only place that used to stock the 'decent' models were a bunch of Catch You Next Tuesdays... nastiest people under the sun! Spent a long time mulling over Mexican models to buy...

Did you hear how they sounded? I got some EMGs over summer and really wanted to like them, they were just... yuck. Blaring, no delicacy at all, overly clinical, and you just couldn't be expressive with them. I tried though, I really did.

If only I had a Hiwatt DR103.... they sounded pretty much as you describe through a Blues Jr. I honestly thought they weren't that bad, but the stock pickups are more versatile considering the different genres I like. Considering the cost of the pickguard, the EMG's should sound like angels singing. Since I didn't feel that I got my money's worth, I sent it back and got a wah, octavia, and uni-vibe. To me, the difference was like getting a new toy for Christmas instead of a sweater.

Does David Gilmour know that you've nicked his 0001 Strat?

My first Strat was brand new in 1974 at the Guitar Center in Missoula, Montana. It was sunburst and has a 3-way switch. I thought it so cool that I could put the switch "in-between" positions and get that hollow out-of-phase tone! Sold it to a best friend with the condition that if he ever sold it I got first choice. 6 months later he traded it for a motor for his truck! I would have happily given him the $250 that the guy's asking price for the motor. Some friend...

in 1975 I was working in a music store. The store owner gave me, as a gift for helping him in the store so much, a 1967 Strat that was completely apart and the finish was stripped off. I gave the guitar to my dad who gave it to an old guy who fixed the whole thing up like new for FREE. When the store owner saw it he was mad he gave it too me. One day a kid walked into the store and had a brand new condition 1966 Gibson ES-335 and asked if I wanted to trade it for the Strat. I did not hesitate back in those days and did the trade. Man oh man, wish I would have kept a couple of those old guitars!

I had a cheap strat copy around 1997 - 1999, which sounded ok for my purposes at the time, upgraded the tuners to Gotoh tuners though.

I eventually sold it to get a Japanese made Jackson.

My second strat style guitar was a '84 Japanese Squire. I swapped the pickups for a set of EMG single coils. Awesome guitar and eventually I tripled my money on it when I sold it to finance a move to a new apartment when the landlord, in his grand wisdom decided not to pay the gas bill to his building and left us with no hot water.

My first real Fender Strat was obtained this past week while on vacation in Ontario. My wife bought me an American Deluxe in Sunset Metallic. :D  :o :D

Nah, DG is completely unaware. Let's just say he'll be comfortably numb for a while :P
