I bought a 2010 Gibson Les Paul Studio Silver Burst lately. I love owning a Fender Strat and a Gibson Les Paul, its like having both a Camero and a Mustang in your garage.
You have heard about the protected ebony scandal Im sure. Well here is a cake topper, my toggle switch went out so I got a new one for it.
I took the old one out only to find they used an import straight from the factory.
Remember when Gibson USA was something to be proud of?

For several reasons, this doesn't surprise me. The times, they are a changing...

Yeah I always put Dimarzios in when I buy a new guitar. I thought I just cooked the pot as you usually do on a Gibson. After 3 pots and a new solder iron I traced it to the switch.
Makes me wonder if my jack is Switchcraft now.
This is my 6th Les Paul and my 5th Strat.
I also was the guitar repairman as a side job for Worldwide Music in Raytown MO. They went under about 15 years ago.
Just never thought Id see the day...

Gibson used Schaller parts for many years. In fact, when they moved to Nashville, the old factory now run by Heritage guitars used Schaller for several years after. Nothing wrong with them and I seriously doubt much of either Fender or Gibson's hardware is actually made in the US. Its all cast metal materials that can be made anywhere under the right quality control.

It's sad, really. I have two les pauls and the Epiphone has never given me a problem, while my overly expensive Gibson has a problem almost every time I look at it. Cheap switch, poor soldering, faulty pots, you name it.

Gibson and Fender changed to Schaller hardware because they wanted (one of) the best.
CTS pots are great but all of them are produced since 1970 in Taiwan.
Alpha pots Asia etc.
I don´t like seeing cheap hardware on American guitars. I prefer Schaller anytime over Ping hardware from Asia.
I would love to see USA made hardware on USA made guitars. It´s a shame if a great sounding american guitar is degraded because of the tuners or switches used.

Some products made in Asia are really good and high quality but it´s sad to see Fender and Gibson changing for Asia when there are still great suppliers in the USA.

Cheers,
Robin

Lol Im just bein funny man.
Seriously though I got no problem with high quality imports that wasnt the point. It was that this guitar sells at Guitar Center for $1599.99. The switch is the same one that comes in the $400.00 Epiphone.
My Fender American Deluxe didnt come with any Squire parts in it at the same price.

I had an Epiphone LP Standard. I swapped pup's for Gibson's BB Pro's, bone nut, and strap locks. That's all I did to the guitar. It was a real workhorse. I had a Gibson LP Studio Faded Ebony a year later and returned it because it didn't look, feel, or sound as good as the Epiphone.

Early this summer, I picked up a Gibson LP Custom ($3800 guitar), that was severely shop worn, had paint sink in between the headstock and headstock vaneer causing a finish gap, toggle switch was broken, and the one pickup kept cutting in and out. Now some of that is from the store allow people to beat up new instruments and in other instances, it was poor quality. I rather enjoyed playing their new Melody Maker series than their Custom. That's pathetic!

So do what I did. Get rid of you Gibson and Epiphone and buy a Heritage! :P

I've said this a thousand times: IMO, for a predominantly production line instrument, Gibsons are astronomically overpriced. Yet, players continue to pay these prices, swearing up and down that they are worth every bit of it. YMMV.

I'll take that silverburst off your hands since it has disgusted you so. I'll even pay for the shipping. All that I ask is for you to put the good pickups back in it.
