I'd rather relic a guitar through my own playing. The road worn series is MIM but has a price tag within $50 of a MIA standard strat. I'd rather buy a MIA, at least it comes with a hardshell case.

Understood. However, don't lose sight of what was intended in the Gilmour project. CBS-Fender was in the practice of doing its custom colors over existing sunburst finished bodies, as was the case with The Black Strat. So the CS did that, not to mention, recreating and then repairing all the body routing which DG performed on the guitar to accommodate the electronics and wiring and trem modifications which evolved over the years. All of these were part of the relic process for that instrument and had nothing in common with the goals leading to the Road Worn series.
Doc

It's a great summation! There is a lot of great information in the book about the build and life of the guitar that came with the case candy. Excellent read! I do own a NOS Gilmour strattastic and like I said it fits the bill for me. You should not be surprised anymore Doc, although I know of what you speak my friend!!

You and I took the leap around the same time three years ago and were pleased, as were many others. No arguments there. As for John's commentary, somewhere else in these pages is a narrative as to how many necks were actually on that guitar from its inception. It may actually be his post. Can't remember exactly where I read it but I did.
The reference was made to the fact that the information therein, though not made part of Taylor's book, was indeed fact.

I think I probably posted that neck chronology at some point - I'll admit I got it from the gilmourish.com website that really details Gilmour's gear in excrutiating detail; I just summarized it for easier reading. I have read Taylor's book but I don't have a copy of it myself; I borrowed it from a former co-worker a few years ago.

I know I must have played both the CBS-era '57 and '62 reissues back in the day but I honestly didn't remember the neck shapes. I did get to play both the Relic and NOS versions of the Gilmour when they were first released at a local dealer (that I believe is no longer a Fender dealer - I think this store went back specializing in acoustics and bluegrass instruments).

Either way, John, great information, and gilmourish is a pretty cool website. You mentioned the About Face album, which was great. Oh who am I kidding - they're all great. I would absolutely buy that guitar if it meant I could play as good as he can, but Fender would have to throw in the recording studio/houseboat on the Thames. I'll not hold my breath.
