Hey guys,

I recently bought a JV Strat that I love!!! The tone is great and the neck feels amazing. I have a question though. Will the guitar age? Like will the neck and the body age and show marks? The reason I ask is that I saw Jimmy play on TV the other day and he was using his signature strat and the neck had wear marks and the body was dinged up a little and had wear marks on the body. Does he have this done to them or will this eventually happen?

Thanks!

They will all age it just depends on the time/use.

If your guitar has a nitro cellulose body finish, then it'll start to age (if you play it every day) probably about two years down the line? Obviously it depends on how much you play, how you play it and if you clean it often.

I think... I THINK your guitar has a polyurethane finish, and this takes a little longer to wear, but if you wanted to make it happen a little earlier, get 0000 grade steel wool and rub it in the places you want to age more, that'll free up the finish and soften it down a bit. Don't overdo it.

Nitro is said to relic better than Poly, but one thing's for certain, your neck will age no problemo.

Just depends when you want it aged by, the most rewarding is after years and years of play though :)

I would never dream of aging it any other way. I wish that it was Nitro, but I'm sure it's poly. I have heard that it's a thin coat of poly so it may age quicker. I just love the look and feel of well worn instruments. It also hangs on the wall too, so maybe that will help it. I do play it almost every day, but I have two other strats that demand attention too :)

Now that's what I call a happy man!

Just rock hard and let your axes earn their battle wounds. It's going to happen... especially if you are giging. There is nothing like pressure to perform to make you do things like bang your guitar on your mic stand, effects rack or the steel corner covers of your amp.

If you have a maple neck it will start to turn more of a yellow color. They actually get more beautiful with age. I played that strat once at a music store. The strings were so rusted they were black and the thing still sounded awesome... big honking neck IIRC... but still felt very comfortable!

I had an old sunburst 69 precision bass and the nitro finish on that just started turning to powder at certain points.
