I was just wondering how much does Fender change the standard stratocaster year to year? Are there any big changes? I was thinking of buying a new 2008 model or buying a used 2004 model, and I heard they made subtle changes, in your opinion how big of a deal are the changes?

Thank You,
Ben

they revamped quite a bit on the 2008 american standard... the older ones are very nice and so are the newer ones... play a few of each and see which one suits you better

I am very grateful you replied but can you perhaps list some of the changes and how it affects the playability or guitar in general?

Thanks!

Year to year there are very few changes to any particular line. But after a few years some changes are made to create buzz and increase interest for a while. Most of the time, at least with my experience with Fender, the changes are for the better.

This is just my opinion, but I think Fender is pretty conservative with their brand. (Which is why I think they should just go nuts with their Squier brand...) Usually it takes quite a bit to instigate changes on their equipment...particularly their guitars.

Yeah, Fender fans are very picky about their Strats and Teles. They'll accept change as long as it still feels and sounds like a strat or tele.

You're right, they should go nuts with the Squires.

So does anyone know how the changes this year (2008 model) vary from that of previous years? I know they put in a new bridge and finish...

the january guitar center catalog had a big article about all the changes, with the new standards on the cover, and a 3 page pull out. changes had to do with a thicker bridge block, thinner paint, .... wish i could remember more, i read it a month ago. if you can find a copy of the in home catalog, it would spell everything out

i found that catalog. on top of whats been said, they have also stained the maple necks a deeper tint, cut down on the paint between the neck and body, and put in bent steel saddles.

It would seem that Fender has made changes back to more refined versions of the original equipment/processes... brilliant IMHO! IIRC, the Am std strat has remained virtually unchanged for about eight years!

I have the `08 Strat. Some of the changes were in the neck design. I have the maple neck/fretboard and its polished for one thing. It was also made more " C " shaped from what they say. I believe the paint is thinner also to let the wood " Breathe " better as they put it. And the design of the case is different if that`s of any interest. The handle is offcenter to accomdate where the weight is and it has those new TSA 002 locks. Hope that was of some help.
