I just bought an 08' american standard, 3-tone sunburst, with a rosewood neck. I am absolutely in love with the feel and the sound of this guitar. I've only been playing ~ 1 year and my other guitar is a les paul. Totally diff't world. Anyway I have a question. The pickguard isn't flush to the body on top, next to the neck pickup. Is this anything to worry about??

Sometimes a pickguard just warps. It won't hurt anything, but if it bothers ya call where you bought it and ask them to order you a new one under warranty. All you'll need to do is show them the warping.

I guess i need to clarify a little. So when im holding the guitar if I look down the pickguard right above the neck pickup there is a little gap. Like only enough to fit a pick in. I just want to know if there is something wrong with the guitar or if this is something that is common. I'm brand new to the fender world like i previously stated I'm just kind of a perfectionist. I love this guitar though I'd hate for anything to be wrong with it and have to get a new one. every guitar is a little different and this one is just perfect.

I agree that you should get a new pickguard. The warped explanation seems to make sense. I am a little neurotic about everything being just right on my new standard strat. I have a slight scratch on the fisish and a tiny indentation on the headstock that bothers me.

Hello Treebark,

Maybe it's a blessing, having that convenient spot for
an extra pick.

Cheers.

that gap is normal. if its just big enough to stick a pick in. if it gets bigger, get a new one.

Sometimes the holes on the guitar body do not line up perfectly with the holes in the pickguard. If it bothers you ask the store to replace the pick guard. Sometimes if the screws are installed in the wrong order, the pickguard will warp. If you want to, remove all the outside screws holding the pickguard in and then put them back in starting at the bottom working your way up along both sides at the same time. Or you may just have to tighten a screw a little, but dont over tighten or they will strip out the wood.

Good Luck

so its not a sign of a defect in the guitar at all?? could just be the order of the screws going in?? I would hate to trade in this guitar....ive gotten quite attached.

No its not defective, this is pretty normal for Fenders. If it were a 5,000 dollar Gibson I would punch someone in the face, but its normal with fenders. Stuff like sharp fret endings, fret buzz, an indent on the top of the trust rod's wooden cover (on the neck).

It's warped because the holes on the pickguard are further apart then the matching holes on the body, so it warps to align the holes.

If it bothers you take it back to the store. They can probably fix it right there in the store. But first check to see if all the screws are tight. You could also try the screw order thing, but don't do anything that will void the warranty or damage it.

I would bring it back to the store and have them fix it there. I know I could fix it with simple tools.

Good Luck

I've had several over the years which had that problem. Some had the warp where you speak of, others in different places. To me, they were small enough not to really be concerned. If I were you, I'd just forget about it unless your particular one is that unsightly.
