Hello all.

I want to put Locking Staggered Tuners on a 1984 Strat neck. It has no tuners now but did have a set of Shallers on it at one point (not by me) and so there are 5 additional screw holes on the back.

Recommendations for good bang for the buck tuners, locking and staggered?

I had an '84 Strat about 7 yrs ago, should never have sold it, and really liked the neck. Now I'm going to put this one on my 1PC Koa Strat body.

I like the staggered tuners for the extra tension it gives the strings. I had these on an older 80's Schecter strat and it played very well, though the neck was a bit thin and the pickups were dull.

OK, sorry for the babble. Tuner suggestions please.

Thank you.

Hello gorquin, I just put a set of Sperzel TrimLocs on my Mexican and have no complaints. They are staggered in 3 lengths, lock tight and tune quick. The factory tuners I took off had 2 alignment holes and the new Sperzels have only one. So I had to drill a hole. You would need a #36 drill bit and use the supplied template that comes with the new tuners. The hole will be 5/32" deep, centered between the original holes and just a tad high and if carefully done the tuner body will cover/hide the 2 original holes. I hope this helps.

I like staggered because it lessens the friction bewteen the string and string tree. On an earlier strat i had which had the old bent steel butterfly trees (horrible string tree BTW, replace w/a roller if you can), i was able to cut off the B string side, so the only string under the tree was the high E.
With the strat i built, because i thinned out the headstock, and use staggered locking tuners, i dont need any string trees. I like the Sprezel, which is on my most used strat, they seem to have little more weight than the Schallers i've had. They darken the tone a little, which mitigated the increase in treble with I replaced the MIM trem with a Callaham. The Callaham was noticeably brighter. The Schallers were really good too, I dont think you'd go wrong with either. Ive seen problems with other companies locking tuners. A few gutiars came in with the Planet Waves locking tuners that lock and cut the string at the same time, I cant remember their reasons, but the owners of the guitars both didnt like the PW locking tuners.
