Hello, I answered to a craiglist ad today for an American Strat for $825. But when I arrived I saw that the man had a good selection of guitars.
I tried a 88' Chery Red MIJ strat which I loved! He offered it for $600 but I offered 560 and he settled. I talked to someone about it and said I should have offered less.
I love how it felt and it sounded almost exactly the same as the new American. He told me that it was 23 years old and I noticed the serial had started with a "H" which marks 88-89.
This strat is good for my budget because then I could afford maybe a 200-300 amp and a pedal. (Can I get a good amp for that price?)

Would it be unthinkable to re-offer about $475 for it? I really want to save some money but at the same time I don't know if that would be such a significant drop of money. It was pretty well maintained with some knicks here and there but the bridge was pretty rusted. Is this guitar a snag at $560 or do I have some wiggle room. (It would add to my excitement if I got a good guitar at a good price, I'm sure some of you may understand.) I appreciate the advice!

Hi MR.
I own 2 Stratocasters, made in Japan in 1989.
They are flawless guitars.
I have put them up for sale a couple of times, and have chosen to keep them as I only got offered between 350 and 400 dollars.
In my opinion they are worth 600 dollars at least.
This friend of mine who plays a Les Paul and an American Standard Strat, he is in love with my MIJ Strats. Yet he dislikes the fact that they are Japanese.
This thread is interesting to me because I think these are excellent guitars.
I hope to read some more stories about the MIJ from the late 80´s!

Thanks for the reply mike. I am reluctant because I worked hard for 3 months for my money and I don't want to just spend it all for a mediocre guitar.
I want something that will make me feel like a king when I play guitar for less cash than an American.

I would buy it if i were you. You played it you liked it so why not. I dont know why some people are so iffy about MIJ strat's. Both my strats are MIJ and i have the highest esteem for them. They sound amazing.

I would hold them up against any american strat. MIJ strats made in the 80s have a great reputation too. I am from Aus and over here $560 for a 80s MIJ strat would be a steal!

G'day, I'm also in Aus. I's a vintage guitar mate. If you like it, you really can't go wrong investment wise. They are worth $600 easily IMO.
The quality and finish of my '88 MIJ (white) is far superior to MIM and close to my USA CS (blue).

Japanese Strats from this era are justifiably well respected and will appreciate in value.

Goodonya........Mark.

I have an E series MIJ strat, 87' I believe. A 62 reissue, and for my money, they are amazing guitars. You say you like the idea of gettin a really good guitar on the cheap. Well, you have. Trust me that guitar will not disappoint, and you like it, so go for it. You'll only regret it if you don't. They are quality instruments and mine easily stands up to my CS Gilmour. :D
