I used to think that it didn't look like the Fender headstock that I was used to, and therefore was less cool and less fender-y.

I hated the big headstock cosmetically. It just looked weird to me. But against my own original desire, I tried the Am Special HSS. I thought that maybe I had bought a freak one, because it just sounded and felt perfect to me.

The looks have grown on me, and I have realized that a big part of the reason that I love the feel of it is the big headstock. A friend of mine pointed out that when I do vibrato on any bend, I leverage the weight of the neck against the depressed note. I don't know how much heavier the headstock is than a standard one, but just the weight of the guitar allows me to get the warmest and quickest vibrato I have ever gotten. I suspect that the jumbo frets also allow me to get good vibrato because I feel that I can use lighter pressure on the higher frets.

All I know is that knowing what I know now, if I every buy another strat, I will look at the big headstock ones first.

I always liked the large headstock because the logo was bigger and bolder. As to better sustain, that still has yet to be proven to me. On a side note, back in the day when the women would throw panties at me on stage, the large headstocks would always catch them better. Clearly, YMMV.

I agree about the sustain. My Am Special has a fantastic sustain for a Strat, but I don't know how much of an audible difference that the size or the weight of the headstock makes on sustain.

It's always good to have something to fall back on Martian, a bit of dry cleaning on the side

What about the panties, paztormike? Ever get any thrown at you?

Personally I like the smaller head stock
although i'd love to have a YJM signature model and it has the larger headstock.
just my opinion.
