Hi folks,
Recently I levelled and dressed my frets. 4 months on, and excessive playing, I've noticed a pit/wear at the second fret where the 3rd string lies. (I like to bend the third string at the 2nd fret. Who doesn't?) My question is, what would be the best way to get that area level? Is it worthwhile replacing the entire fret?

its not worth doing another fret dressing if only 1 fret has wear... you can replace the one fret but you will obviously need to dress that fret to the same level as the ones around it... which could mess up the other frets as well, depending on how you do it... if the guitar is still playable then id leave it untill another fret dressing or re fret is needed

Hi Chinaski,

I have the same problem, G string (third string) on second fret is most often the one that I bend too, so I get the divot there before anywhere else (next most is the G string seventh fret). If you don't have any buzzing/rattling, then I wouldn't worry much about it. I just try to play in some other keys for awhile, alternate so that you distribute the wear all over, instead of just that one spot. So many of my favorite songs are in E and A, hence the wear on the G string second and seventh frets.

I should also mention that it is not a deep pit/divot. Maybey fine sand paper will do the trick.

Sanding can only produce an even lower fret, it can't make it any higher, you will only make things worse. Leave it, and put some wear on the other frets.

If it isn't impeding the playing, and isnt causing any fretbuzz because it's a bit lower, just leave it alone. Ive played with strats that have the treble side worn down, and it never hurt anything. I do my own dressing now, so its not an issue, but they're going to get worn in some places more than others. I tend to wear them out on the treble side, between the 5th and15 fret.
Although i would always be conscious of it. Because its low, at the second fret, if it gets too worn down, it will cause you to choke out. But you dont want to dress the frets everytime the start to wear, you'll be in the poor house for 1, and you'll end up having to refret the guitar WAY earlier than you'd normally have to. Like years earlier.
