my trem arm points at the input jack when its finger tight, does that mean i've lost my little spring? is mine supposed to have a spring? (MIM 06 standard) should you be able to see the spring if you look in the hole? what would happen if i only THINK i lost my spring and tried to drop one in, if the original is still in there??

Sometimes if your not careful, whenever you take your trem arm out the spring will usually fall out. This could be what has happened. You could try and poke something down in there and feel for a spring to see if it's there. If you drop another spring in there and it turns out your old one is still in there, the only thing that will happen is your trem arm won't go down as far as it used to before it starts to get kinda snug.

You could give this a try:

Take your trem arm out completely, then grab your guitar by the neck (choke up on that neck like you would a Louisville Slugger)) and start beating it against the floor Hendrix style. If that spring is still in there, I gaurantee you it won't be for long. Once you've knocked the spring out, put your guitar back together, tune up, plug in and celebrate with one hell of a practice session.

Hope I was able to help ya out.

Ok... I was gonna post this and then I saw the description above... kinda violent but hey

All you have to do is take out the trem arm, and turn the guitar upside down, if it comes out you had one, if not you didn't. I recently found out about these, mine didn't come with one and it was doing what yours was. I can't believe how much better it is with one. I went to a local music store and got one for a quarter. :D I also got another Spring for my trem. can't believe how much of a difference it made. :D

i'm not sure if i'll be beating my strat agenst the floor, but i have no issue holding it upside down and shaking it to see if something comes out. i might just pick up a spring next week and drop it in there to see what happens.

That spring is a spacer for the trem arm. If you lost it I`m pretty sure you can get another one at your local dealer.

i just wish there was a way to know for sure if its in there or not, i dont want to drop one in, if there's already one in there. i'm pretty sure that if your standing with the guitar on a strap, the trem arm should point at 4 o'clock at finger tight. mine points at 7 o'clock. is that a way to tell its gone??

Take a look with a flash light but if you turn it upside down, they usually fall out.

If you put a new one in and it comes right out the back, it never had one. (I speak from experience  )

Great advice. This is what makes a forum like this so useful. All these years of experience, sharing the shortcuts we've learned over the decades! Kudo's man! 8)
