Hi, can anyone tell me if moving the truss rod a couple of turns to raise the strings will effect the intonation?

I took my deluxe strat into shop as I was getting a slight buzzing from it, the guy straight away turned the truss rod a couple of turns..I thought this was a bit much, as it could have just been the strings needing changed or something like that, I bought a set of 9's (bullets) and he was going to put these on as well.

The action now seems a bit high and I have problems with the intonation since. I have done a few adjustments myself after watching youtube vids and it seems a lot better.

But now I want to lower the action again, would it be ok to turn it once in the opposite direction and redo intonation?

First time doing anything like this, hope you can help!
Indy

Hi indianabones,

Yes, if the action is too high you can have intonation problems where fretting pulls the string out of pitch. You can tighten the truss rod adjust to put it back to the lower action that you like, that is why there is an adjustment. I would recommend a complete review of the entire setup, including truss rod, saddle height, pickup height, trem plate height from body, etc. See the Fender guidelines for instructions (link below). These are just guidelines, not set rules, but they make an excellent starting point and you can tweak from there. Generally speaking, if you get buzz/rattle when fretting only from any of the frets 1 to 15 or so, adjust truss rod for more relief (bow), and if the buzz/rattle is when fretting only from any of the 15th fret and higher, adjust the saddles. But the setup is really a combination of all of the adjustments.

I agree with you on this. I think a couple of turns is a lot. The advice on this seems to be: a quarter turn, then let the neck settle a few hours.

cheers,
Serge

Hi guys, thanks for response, I am going to give it a quarter turn to see if this helps. I called up the shop and they said to take it in if I have any more problems but think I will give it a go myself.

I know I should get everything checked so maybe need to take it for a complete set-up as Shimmilou recommends.

Thanks again!

This set up should be made most seriously.

You have to take some mesurement for a " standard" neck curve. You can't do this job like a blind.
Never adjust truss rod without mesurement. AFTER the neck curve is good you check something else.

1-saddles height
2-frets

Ask around to find a better tech.
The shop you went to, your guitar came out sounding worse.
Two full turns? And he inspected it for how long?
I asked and so found a good tech. When you walk in, you can tell. :D
While you are in, ask your questions. Learning helter-skelter will draw you away from actually sounding your instrument.

I doubt that the truss rod was adjusted two full turns. More likely it was adjusted two quarter turns.

+1 shimmilou ; 2 full turn ; impossible without a serious " damage"

IMO, indanabones can't evaluate well the work do on his truss rod.

Hey indiana, go to see on You Tube, truss rod adjustment video .

it was only 2 quarter turns, i never said full turns!!
I have turned it one quarter turn back and it seems fine now, intonation good and better action!
Going into shop tomorrow to buy an amp, best take it with me and get it checked out!

Thanks for all comments..appreciated!

It is easy to learn and with proper and cheap tools , for mesuring neck curve, you'll be able to do your own truss rod adjustment.

Why to learn that ?
1- neck curve can varie twice a year byt he weather change
2- If you change gauge of strings , you need to check neck curve
3- if you change your playing style , an another neck curve could be better
4- Don't need to go to your music store, save money and must important ; have your guitar right now. If you have few guit, it pays
