Henry is talking trash. If Gibson is in violation of anything, it's import/export law - specifically importing illegal wood - and that doesn't affect Joe Citizen taking his guitar with him to France. As I understand it, if you take you personal guitar out of the country, you are not exporting it and nobody is going to confiscate it. Thanks to Henry's typical crazy-talk style, this issue has been blown way out of proportion, and there are no "storm troopers" at work here.

Just posting the information given to me, not wanting
to create a revolution.
I really do hope he's only talking trash Jim.
Speaking purely on having lived in a border town for
many years, if you have something on you that's illegal
in tarrif laws, it will be confiscated.
An example, Mexico sells sea turtle skin boots, (personally
I woulnt purchase) and are illegal to cross into the USA .
If your wearing them while crossing the border, they will confiscate
Them leaving you barefoot. Unknown to me if they impose
Any charges.

I think that it may be an issue in the future, Like ivory keys on a piano..... the only thing that bothers me about this whole thing is the fact that Gibson was even bothered :/ there are probably more important things going on in the world. also in this economic situation to shut down a us manufacturer for that period of time and send all those employees home is just messed up. I think all this is going to do is drive prices of rosewood and ebony up

just my 2 cents with little value

It's really pretty simple when you know the facts. Fender CEO sends money to Democrats. Gibson CEO sends money to Republicans, and gets raided!

Look into it. It's out there.

I agree with somebizzaredude. It's the employees that lost out by getting sent home. Did Gibson still pay? I don't know. But I know somewhere down the line, we will have to pay more for products because of stuff like this!

If one travels out of the country with something on the Lacy or CITES list, then, yes it can be confiscated unless YOU have the documentation to prove it was legally harvested or predates the ban.

If you have a guitar made with Braz rosewood and it was made before 1969, then YOU have to provide documentation of that fact (and just the serial number is not proof). That instrument will be confiscated.

As far as I know, Indian Rosewood is not on such a list although the flap with Gibson would lead us to believe so. The Flap with Gibson, as far as I have been able to figure out, isn't about the wood so much as it is about how the Indian Government and the US Government define if the wood was worked / finished to a sufficient level in India before being imported into the US.

Indian rosewood is a sustainable plantation grown source of wood. Much of what is used for guitar fret boards, and acoustic guitar backs and sides is grown on tea plantations to shade the tea plants (bushes). When the rosewood trees get to a given size, they are harvested for their wood.

This situation, as far as what has been discussed publicly, is more about the quagmire of government regulations and the US DOJ's interpretation of Indian law. It's not about an endangered species.

This last fact is what makes it more scary to those of us who may travel. I don't think the police are going to knock on your door (yet) and confiscate your guitar, but if you take it out of the country, the customs in the country to which you are traveling, or the customs back here when you return can and will confiscate it for whatever reason they choose and it is up to you to prove them wrong.

The paperwork and attorney's fees would most likely exceed the value of the guitar. At which point, the government would destroy it (probably by an agent giving it to his 15 year old emo thrasher kid) or auction it off.

Just saying...

Jeff

Old news. This is at least the third thread about this subject in a couple of weeks. Doesn't anyone search anymore before posting?

That's a good idea, turn this one into a maple vs rosewood debate, much less heated than politics. (it really is) :o

I'll start:

This is another reason why maple is superior to rosewood!

Just joking of course. :)
