No! If you want a hardtail play a Telecaster! The tremelo is an important part of the Strat sound. It is unique there is none like it. What would the Shadows sound like with no tremelo? What would Dick Dale be surfing with no tremelo? Would Jimi Hendrix play the Star Spangled Banner on a Gretsch with a Bigsby? Could Jeff Beck keep his guitar in tune without his tremelo? Would David Glimour be a famous well known guitarist today? How could any self respecting guitarist not use it when playing "Born to Be Wild" at the local Bike rally? Nay... I say nay... now get some hay for the horse :) to each his own I guess...

One of my recent builds is a hardtail with thru body stringing. I plan on building both bridge versions as well as I would buy an OTS Strat with a hardtail as well as a Tele, which does not in any manner shape or form sound or play like a strat....It's like a Thoroughbred vrs a Morgan...

Hardtail string-through-body Strat? Heck yeah!

That's one of the features of my "ultimate" Strat that I want to build...collecting pieces "One piece at a time" for that purpose.

+1, SA

I've been thinking about building a '58 clone lately......in Sea Foam Green. Possibly with Fralins.

I most certainly would. I have my trem floating but to be honest I rarely use it. You'd be surprised how much wobble you can put on a chord with just your hands.

I'd be interested to see if there was a big improvement in sustain.

:)

It's all about an Adjust-O-Matic or similar, so you get the hardtail and third bridge.

That would be nice to see, different and that, but it's a killer bridge.

Not sure I'd cough up the cash for an MIA hardtail, but a MIM would definately be in the realm of reality.

And Fender could do it too -- with virtually "zero" R&D costs. Simply bolt a MIM 60's Classic Series neck to the Robert Cray body, swap the RC pickups for (my recommendation) CS 57/62's, then open up the available color palette for some tasty vintage finishes. I should e-mail Brad again......

I've wanted a Robert Cray strat just because its a hard tail. I never use a tremolo and keep the bridge flat against the body.

Same here...I played a Robert Cray Strat way back in '87 I think it was,it was a pretty blue color,I bought a black American Standard instead, but I've thought of that other one often....I don't use the trem either and keep it flush.

I have two MIA string-through hardtail Strats, an '02 and an '05 and I love them both. The '02 is my Open-G dedicated Strat. I also have blocked trem Strats, and the hardtail Strats do have a somewhat different sound, but they sound great in their own way.

BTW, I'd second the bit about hardtail = hardtosell. Not the guitar to buy with the intent to flip. Fender stopped making them for a reason...

Yes, depending on other details, of course. The Strat (‘88 MIJ Standard) I have now is a hardtail and I haven’t missed the trem in the 11 years that I’ve owned it.

Hardtail or blocked trem?

It's a true hardtail - it never had a trem.

Dang fine question...if I had found a RC I probably would have bought that instead of the 60s Classic Series strat I bought...but came across the Classic first and fell in love...I don't have one functioning trem on any of my strats...five springs tightened down flush bridge and blocked ala EC Strat...

I think Retroverbial was right on track with his post...and yes Arjay e-mail away!

FWIW
