Are there any Stratocasters that have a slanted humbucker on the bridge position for sale? If not, does anyone know how to get one? For example Billie Joe Armstrong's "Blue".

thanks in advance!

I cant think of any. All you have to do is just get a new pickguard and depends on the body if you have a swimming pool or not you may have to route for the humbucker

You could always put a single coil size humbucker in a starndrd SSS type pickguard.

I assume you mean a full size slanted humbucker?

Obviously there's any number of standard SC size humbuckers that will drop right in.

There's a company called Vintage (John Hornsby Skewes in conjunction with Trevor Wilkinson designs) who make a Strat-like guitar with a slanted humbucker. I seem to recall it's a signature model..

Hi SnowyPuma: I have a feeling I have seen the Vintage brand guitar adey is talking about, though I can't locate it at this second. Apart from that I can't think of any production line Strats with a slanted full humbucker; I'm guessing that any you've seen are ones where the user has modded the pickguard himself.

That look is a matter of personal taste, but it is worth mentioning that it will have the functional disadvantage of some of the poles on one or both halves of the humbucker being seriously out of line with the strings, with the consequences for compromised signal that implies. A theoretical solution to that would be to slide one of the coils sideways against the other so that they looked staggered and were now both in line with the strings. Maybe that would look cool as well. I have never seen it done, but for sure I can't be the first person who's thought of it. I bet it's out there somewhere.

Cheers - C

Seymour Duncan recently came out with a replacement slanted humbucker for the Epiphone Nighthawk. Might be close to what you are looking for.

The Custom Shop Neal Schon signature model (masterbuilt by Greg Fessler) has a reverse slanted humbucking pickup in the bridge, which is essentially two single-coils mounted together side-by-side.

Although this guitar is in production since 2007, it's not actually listed on the CS website.

Hey chromeface, that's the concept I was getting at! Though I'd prefer to see it slanting the other way.

I wonder if those are two completely separate single coil pickups or if they are joined by common flatwork underneath?

Anyway, interesting: thank you.

Cheers - C

Also, the John Jorgenson Custom Shop Telecaster has a slanted humbucker. Unfortunately I have no idea as to the brand or maker.

I don't recall ever seeing a "factory" Strat with a slanted humbucker. It would be easy enough to do if you own a router and a dremel tool. Personally I think it will look kind of ugly but if you like it, then go for it.

Eddie Van Halen did exactly what your trying to do back in 1979, and I did it in 1989. The problem I had with it on my guitar, was not all of the pole pieces of the humbucker line up with the strings, and I lost a little of the "Snap" you would normally have from the low "E" string. This may have partly attributed to EVH's "Brown Sound" in the early days.

What's ironic about this thread is that I ripped out that 22 year old Dimarzio P.A.F. Pro, and went to a Seymour Duncan Jeff Beck Jr. about two weeks ago. The Jeff Beck Jr. is a humbucker that fits in a single coil opening in the pick guard. I now have the "Snap" from the low "E" string that I lost two decades ago. I wish I had changed to the Jeff Beck Jr. years ago. I would have appreciated the sound and response from my guitar more.

Oh yeah, I kept the coil splitter I rigged up for the old Dimarzio for the Seymour Duncan JBjr., and I can still always get that single coil sound if I want it.

Cool stuff.

Just to be a pedantic smart alec, Jeff Beck may well have played the JB pickup apparently made for him, but even Seymour Duncan himself states that the JB in the name stands for Jazz/Blues, rather than being the initials of his Beckness..

Carry on..

That may be. I was unaware of that statement made by Seymour Duncan. I only called it "Jeff Beck" Jr., because I thought "JB" stood for "Jeff Beck." Thanks for the info. I do however, really like that pickup, and would suggest it for anyone thinking about dropping in a humbucker on a slant in the bridge position.

To this day, I wish I had never routed out a pocket in the body of my "Strat" on a slant to accomodate the fullsize DiMarzio I had in there for the last 20 years. I'll go to my grave saying that because of the pole pieces not lining up perfectly, I lost some response in my low "E" string, and it always bothered me. Thats why I love the "JB Jr.". the pole pieces line up with the strings, and it fits in the single coil cut out in the pick guard.

Don't do what I did and butcher your body. I kick myself for doing that.

I like the JB jnr too. AND the SD 'lil'59, which is a better match for the output of the standard single coils elsewhere on the guitar.

When I have some mad money, I'd be very tempted to modify a Strat with a full set of 'lil'59s.. Wonder how that would send? Anybody done it?
