Hi, first post here.

I'm looking at replacing the strings on my MIJ Fender Strat, aswell as on my Tokai Goldstar Strat. In the past I have always used Ernie Ball Super Slinky strings and now would like to try something different. I was thinking about trying out the Ernie Ball Extra Slinky strings which are 8 gauge strings. I play stuff like Ramones, Green Day, etc. Would these strings be a suitable choice? Or would Ernie Ball Regular Slinky be a better choice? I just feel like a change.

Also, I know there's a difference between different gauges in strings, but when it comes to different brands is there much of a difference? I'm talking about all the top brands like Fender, Ernie Ball, D'addario, etc.

Any help would be appreciated! :)

Sam

i use ernie ball super slinky 9's and they fit most of my needs with my strat, but if you want a change of pace i would reccomend the d'addario strings, i have them on my les paul and have never had any problems with them

I use EB slinky 9s. This is what your used to. What could it hurt to experiment with the 8s?

Thanks for the replies. :)

I guess I've just got to do a bit of experimenting with different strings.

Believe it or not I actually like Fender strings- although I use .009's I have used EB's in a pinch and they are fine.

Give the 8 gauge a shot and really put some jam time on them. At first they may feel to light and you may get a little more fret buzz. After a few rehearsals you will definately know if they feel and play right for your style and needs. The string manufacturers that you have mentioned make great guitar strings, it's really up to you as which brand works best for you.
Try the Ernie 8's first. If not satisfied switch to the next brand on your list.

Thanks you superdanxlr8, I did a search for those strings. Sounds real interesting and I may try them out too.

I've tried lots of strings in my career and have come to rely on Ernie Ball 10s, Regular Slinkys. I usually buy them in bulk, ten or a dozen at the time depending on the deals I find on line. It really depends on the sound you want but for tonal brilliance and sustain you'll want thicker gage strings. 8s are great for barre chords without tiring but for real tonal quality I'm sure you'll be happier as you train yourself to use thicker strings.
