Hi,

I found this '79 Strat, which supposed to be Antigua

Image

everything looks original, except of course the ugly Floyd trem / locking nut and tuners (the 80s.....)

I've never seen an Antigua finish like that, is it another finish, like greyburst or something ?

Thanks

Looks pretty good,... that finish could be "homemade", but I don't know, maybe not.

Looks real nice, but I agree, doesn't look like antigua to my eyes anyway. But it could be a trick of the light! :?:

That is not Antiqua. It could be a nice refinish in a similar scheme. Antiqua is a light yellowish green that darkens into a greenish grey.

I agree with you that the guitar the OP posted looks like an antigua-ish refin - it looks too dark silvery-grey. However, I recall antigua as a really a light dove-grey burst from the factory - the ones I saw back in the day didn't have any yellowish-green to them sitting in the store. Now they turned that greenish/yellowish/greyish color very quickly. I remember really wanting the '79 Strat in antigua that my dealer had in; they also had a matching P-bass and both were more grey at first. Outside of those two instruments I've never seen one that hadn't begun to turn green. The MIJ reissues from a couple of years ago were too green - they were more like one that had been in smokey bars for 5-10 years than how I remember the ones from the factory.

Oh yeah - my dealer back then was also a Gibson dealer; they had a nice display that had the two antigua Fenders and a silverburst LP Custom going for a while. The guy I took lessons from bought the silverburst LP so I got to play it from time-to-time (along with his '62 Strat refinned to natural) but I never really got to do more than pick up and strum the antigua Strat a couple of times before it was sold.

on the other photos I have finish looks original, at least 20/30 years old. I read that Antigua was supposed to be grey-ish at start, then the lacquer made it yellow-ish, so maybe the lacquer used on this one went the other way ?

That there is a totally BOGUS Antigua finish!!
It may be a '79 neck with the appropriate serial number and such....but the finish looks homemade!!
People have dumped on the actual Antigua finish for being "ugly".....but this one takes the cake!!! It actually makes the original Antigua finish look GOOD!!! (no offense!)

I have a '79 Antigua (see pic)....and have seen other Antigua finishes.....this one is no where near authentic!!

Let the buyer beware/warned!!

Nice '79; that's what I remember them looking like new in the store that year. Your's hasn't "greened" very much and still looks very "factory fresh" (in terms of color) in that photo.

Thanks! I keep her well polished and she doesn't see much outside air anymore.
I ditched those horrible '79 pickups and put in 2 DiMarzio Area 67's and a Dimarzio Virtual Solo.
If you look under/beside the middle pickup, you will see a wearing in the pickguard that is due to my heavy hand!
Still....she was my 1st 'REAL" Stratocaster that led me on this road of obsession!!

If you can get it cheap, who cares if its original. Looks like a pretty cool guitar!

no offense meant but if my wife's dog looked like that, I'd shave its backside and teach it to walk backward.

not a very pleasing to my eye finish on that one. It could be original Fender.

What little I remember of the 70's (several years between 77 and about 81 are a little hazy in my memory :) ) there were some really ugly colors of cars, guitars, carpet, and clothing being passed off as "cool".

Of course, a lot of that time I was in very little condition to notice or remember a whole lot.
