Hi there,

I've been an acoustic/classical guitar player for a while, got a new MIM Standard Strat about a month ago. Noticed from the start buzz on the open D string...recently changed the strings and the buzz is still there.

I also notice when I drop the strings half a step, some string rattle occurs.

Any tips/advice?

Thanks, much appreciated.

It sounds like the D-string slot in the nut is slightly too deep.

Hi AC, I'm assuming there's no buzz when you fret the string. If you bought it from an authorized dealer under warranty, you should return it for repair or replacement.

Yeah, no buzz when I fret the string.

It's an authorised dealer, guess I have to pay them a visit.

Your neck might have an up bow in it, and just may need an adjustment to the truss rod. Put a capo, or fret the low E string, then fret the last fret. Use the string as sort of a straight edge, just look down the lenght of the neck where you have the string fretted at both ends. Does it look like its bowing up? If you are fretting the first fret for lack of a capo (though playing acoustic I doubt you wouldnt have one), fret the last fret w/the pinky of your other hand. Stretch up, and see when you press down on the string ON the 8th fret or so (i mean on the fret, not to the side like you're playing). Does it have any five before it touches the fret? There should be just a little, by eyeballing it, maybe 1 or 2 playing/business cards.

If its this reason, it may only be on that string because the saddles on that string are too low...

Or it could be a nut cut too deep like everyone else said.

If it buzzes open but NOT fretted.....I vote nut cut too low...or nut cut too tight...or nut cut at wrong angle.
Simple test for low nut. When you hold the string down on the 5th fret.....does the string touch the first fret? If yes...chances are..too low.

I still recommend----

A feeler gauge is a beautiful thing.
