Need some help??
I have had a 95 strat plus that had sperzels and a 2010 American Deluxe that had Shallers and a PRS that had the auto trim Planet Waves.
I also had a Melancon Classic Artist with Grover locking tuners with the internal cam.

I just purchased a 2006 Mexi fat strat and i'm thinking of putting locking tuners on it.
Any suggestions??

I havent removed the tuners to see if they have one hole or two drilled into the headstock.

Thanks
Mike

Fender/Schaller locking tuners are direct drop-in replacements for the factory Pings. No drilling or other modification is needed. Pop the originals out, pop the lockers in and you're done.

I'll keep the Strat Plus original, Sperzels. It could be a collectible guitar.

I'd like to know the answer to your question too, but I'm going to respond to your question with a question of my own. You've already had 4 different varieties of locking tuners. Which one do you like best?

honestly i liked the grovers the best.
but i'm looking for what will work with this guitar without having to drill new holes.
of the four the planet waves were the worst by far,
the schallers were great and the sperzels were too.
The grovers look like standard tuners from the back but are locking.

Hello,

did some googling and see that there are Fender/Schaller locking tuners in satin finish (made in Germany) and Fender locking tuners in chrome finish with the "F" logo on them, but doesn't say where they are made. Both visually look the same except for finish. Does anyone know if the chrome tuners are also made in Germany by Schaller?

Thanks,

I have them both. The brushed chrome and the non "F" chrome ones are indeed made in Germany.
The ones with the Fender "F" on the tightening wheels are made in Indonesia.I have the "F" ones on only one my guitars.....my "go to" guitar actually and they've given me no issues.
Other than having to find on E-Bay (no easy feat!!) one single tuner to replace the high "E" tuner that lost it's grip!!
Other than that.....I can't really dump on them....

Hello,

do you think that the failure of the high E tuner was the fault of inferior craftsmanship or materials?

Thanks,

Did some more research and found that the Fender locking tuners with the "F" logo are made in Korea by Ping. One review that I read stated that the Ping tuners have an 18:1 turning ratio instead of 16:1 like the Fender/Schaller ones(I can't say if that is accurate just passing it along). I also notice that the Ping locking tuners are standard on the 2011 American Deluxe ash strats. I am assuming that the quality must be there if Fender is putting them on $1600.00 guitars.

Hi Mike: in my experience either Schallers or Sperzels do an excellent job if locking tuners are needed.

Just for the sake of information, I also like Gotoh's, if a lighter weight, high quality tuner is desired. A glance at their model number designation system on page five of the catalog reveals that almost all of their machineheads can be configured with locking poles, regardless the style of the tuner. This greatly expands the choices offered and might be a surprise to anyone who is only familiar with the limited range usually available from aftermarket sellers. If you're curious here's the catalog:

Cheers - C

Ceri
really appreciate the info.
I have heard that Mexican strats can be upgraded to be just as good as an American for much less.
This being a fat strat i upgraded the single coil pups to Lawerence L200's which give it much more of a true strat sound.

I am looking to get a pearloid pickguard and the locking tuners will finish it off.

first time with this tremolo and i'm not too happy with it will work fine for now.

I will look into the Gotoh's
Mike

Mike,

after reading your post, last week, and giving it some consideration I ordered a set of Fender/Ping locking tuners, off Amazon for $43.00 + free shipping, and installed them Saturday. It definitely makes re-stringing a breeze. No instructions are provided with the tuners, but after some googling I found that inserting the string through the hole at the one o'clock position susposedly works best.

Thanks,

I have a similar problem, my Strat has the brushed chrome locking tuners but for some reason the previous owner replaced one of them with a single sperzal on the B string, which not only looks odd but is a pain to tune as it's not a great fit.

I want to replace it but I can't find anywhere that sells them individually, I've tried online and local dealers as well as scouring Ebay on a regular basis without any luck.
I'm pretty much ready to cave and buy a full set but I have been given conflicting information as to whether the pegs are graduated or all the same height, so if someone could clear that one up for me I would really appreciate it :).

The pegs are graduated in height. There are three tall post for E,A,D and three short post for G,B,E. Good luck!

I have the Fender staggered height lockers and the Planet waves auto-trim lockers...

I like the Fenders better, they have a bigger thumbwheel, bigger buttons, they're staggered ht. and the Planet Waves tuners while fine as tuners. 18-1ratio btw the trimmers reeeeally don't like the 42 & 32 strings, have to "wiggle" them to get the cut.
The P/W set is not staggered ht, and uses smaller thumbwheels making them harder to lock, and require poking 6 screwholes in the back of the headstock.

Fender's the winner to me, I can trim my own strings.
