Projects can either be Team-Built or Master-built; the former is a group effort, the latter gets the attention of one luthier. My guitar was team built and, at the time of the order ( 2years ago) we were around 3K for the project as described. 5K is likely to be a rough starting point for a Masterbuilt project.

There was, in another discussion, a URL posted which gave access to information specific to what design requests required a Masterbuilt project.

In any event, the starting point is a dealer who is certified to handle CS project orders. You design the project, they submit it, the shop will advise them as to what the cost of the project will be.

If you log on to the Custom Shop discussion group in forums, and scroll down to the posting "How to order/how expensive" you'll find a link of interest that will provide you with additional details regarding Masterbuilt vs. Teambult projects.

The price list on Fender Frontlilne Online will also give you the list for many of the Custom Shop guitars.

I played the Mayer, the SRV, and a '62 hot rod all in the same sitting. The reality is they're all ridiculously nice - you really can't go wrong with any of them (assuming you have the $ to spend).

The Mayer strat really is sweet, and (as other said above) versatile. I would have bought the shoreline gold one I played if it didn't have that racing stripe on it - I just couldn't get past it.

The JM's sound is awesome, and the playability is insane - the frets (dunlop 6105s or something to that effect) are what grabbed me the most - they're really thin and tall, and make bending and intonation really easy - which is cool if you're into bends and vibrato.

I'm not a big fan of the tuning keys on the JM strat - those gotoh classic ones - but I know they make affordable replacements gotoh classics with locking heads.

I'm gonna wait til I can find a JM strat with a white body and then i'll get it.

I think if someone REALLY wants that "SRV tone" it takes a lot more than his guitar to get it. Like others stated above, it's a little one-dimensional - for the $, you could probably locate a solid MIM strat, put some fat strings on it and upgrade the pickups with those texas specials, and save yourself a whole bunch of cash.

back to the topic, a friend told its a rip off to by it, i can get it for 1500 brand new, with case. But he thinks, i should just by a strat and add texas specials myself, if i was to get the srv, over the mayer. so..... should i stay with gettin the actual SRV or the home made version lol

There are a host of factors in a guitar build which combine to form tone. Body woods, neck woods and mass, fretboard type, fret type, finish, electronics, hardware...the instrument resonates the combination of all these.

You have to decide for yourself what plays well in your hands and go from there.

Stop trying to capture the lost chord. Find your own, and start with a guitar that fits your comfort level. Then, if you want to start swapping out pickups, changing string gauges, or playing different neck types you can do so. You may, over time, go through several different guitars in the process.

It's obvious that you want to connect with these artist whom appear to be influences of yours. Remember , they have already gone through the process and, in the case of Number #1, it was a rogue guitar and love at first sight, as was "Blackie", as was Peter Green's Les Paul.

Can't offer you much more than that. It's your card. Play it.

Words of wisdom. Wish I read 'em sooner - I would've saved a lot of time (and $) in my life. :)

The reality is, none of those guys sound just like their influences - the reason they're so good is that they make the music and the sound their own.

SRV played Hendrix, but it didn't sound like Hendrix, it sounded like SRV.

JM plays SRV (and Hendrix), and it sounds like JM playing the songs.

I remember reading a quote in a press release from JM when that strat came out - something to the effect of: it's not his intention to provide something to cover what's already been done - it's his intention to provide a really great tool to create your own ideas.

In the Artist Series, the individual is saying, this is what works for me, in my hands, see if it works for you.

I finally reached a point in my life where I was able to build a guitar which is a blend of all the things I felt worked, had an esthetic appeal, and reminded me of a time, long ago, when I was a younger guitar slinger, with a '58 Strat on my shoulder, and that's about 50 years. It belonged to a bandmate of mine who owned it new. I had the pleasure of playing at that time as well. When the Jaguars were released, the Strat became mine.

My new guitar is a nod to it, and my influences. That ultimately should be your goal. A guitar that defines you.

Just thought I'd revive this thread, since I ponied up last week and ordered a JM strat limited edition in cypress mica. I spent all weekend playing it, and it's without question the best-sounding, best-playing, best-looking guitar I've ever owned. It's perfect in every way. The army-like gig bag is pretty cool too, though I'm not that into having a gig bag / backpack (I'll keep in in a tollex case) - you can tell Mayer and Fender put some time into this one.

It's really nowhere near as green as I thought it would be - it's more of a gunmetal grey with a hint of green. Anyway, since I combed the web looking for info on this one before I bought it, I thought I'd post, and offer to answer any questions anyone might have about it .... if anyone's interested in pics, let me know and I'll post some.
